As the time passed families shifted from being Patriarchal to Matrifocal where the male is no longer the head of the family and all of the authority is headed by the woman and there isnt any husband present in this type of family (Mustapha, Sociology For Caribbean Students page 137.)
Males were the ones who were given the opportunity to attend schools and have a chance of obtaining an education where as women were seen as the ones who were to prepare for marriage, look after the household and raise their offspring. As time passed by women began to brake away from the patriarchal society and began to develop a sense of independence. They began to go to school and women were seen to do better than males and more likely to succeed.Males were seen as the ones to become scientist and doctors but the roles switched. Women are the ones becoming doctors and other professions.

Women were discriminated from jobs because society believed that they belonged in the household. There was a turn in tables where the males were found to be the ones looking after homes as to the women. The women began to prove there worthiness and proved that they can do just as much as males in the field.
Image cited from:

In this Caribbean Civilisation course i learnt a lot about the demographic background of the entire Caribbean. Through this course i was able to learn about slavery and indigenous groups which settled in the caribbean. The Africans were of the first of the groups to settle in the caribbean and they worked on the sugar cane plantations in the early 1800's. The next to arrive was the indians , the chinesse and the white waged workers.
This course also gave me a big in sight on the struggles which these slaves faced on the plantations and the injustice which they faced. These slaves weren't allowed to practice their own culture other wise the would have been beaten or punished severely. I also learnt about the history of chatel slavery, the ways in which the slaves revolted against there owners on the plantation.

After slavery was abolished the planters needed to find some others means of labor to work on the plantations so, they were forced to rehire some of the free slaves and some whites to work on the plantations.
Caribbean Civ provides everyone with opportunity to experience what the caribbean stands for, the struggles which were faced by the indigenous people people. These struggles give a sense of identity to the caribbean peopl and a sense of togetherness.
