         <title>Shang Dynasty</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-The Shang Dynasty started in about the mid-18th to the mid-16th century B.C., beginning with the Bronze Age. <br>-It was the first to technically be considered a dynasty.<br>-This was called the Bronze Age because bronze was the most commonly used metal at the time.<br>-The bronze was associated with the nobles, so many trinkets and other items made from bronze were found in tombs of the royal family.<br>-Very simple Chinese characters existed during this time<br>-Oracle bones became popular around this time. These were turtle shells or cattle bones.          <title>Zhou Dynasty</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-The Zhou Dynasty ruled from 1045 to 256 B.C.<br>-They came up with the "Mandate of Heaven" idea.<br>-The Zhou divided the kingdom into many states<br>- They appointed trusted people as the chiefs of these regions.<br>-A ruler was overthrown in 771 B.C. The new rulers moved the capital to Luoyang, beginning the "E<em>astern Zhou period".<br>-</em>During this time cities grew, a merchant class developed, and they replaced trade with the use of money.<br>-Confucius and Laozi developed their ideas during this time.<br>-The Zhou central government eventully lost power to its large states, causing its downfall.<br><br> Hardy, Grant.          <title>The Qin Dynasty</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-The Qin Dynasty existed between 650 B.C. and 206 B.C.<br>-They unified China in 221 B.C.!<br>-When Shi Huangdi died, he was buried with the famous terracotta soldiers.<br>-They expanded the Great Wall of China<br>-They conquered many areas, and were able to create their own government.<br>-They did not have a feudalistic government, like most places nearby, and was therefore able to thrive more so than these places.<br>- The Qin was not a big thing until Xiaogong and Shang Yang worked together to create a very well organized state.<br>-They had strict laws for everyone, encouraged farming,doubled taxes for any males who were not masters of a home. This last one meant that there were smaller families because young children were forced to make their own living.<br>-Measures for trading items were all the same to make trading easier.<br>-After Xiaogong and Shang Yang died, Xiaogong's son took over and made Qin into a large power.<br>-Shi Huangdi then took over, unified China, and made many changes. These were getting rid of the feudal system completely, dividing the country into 40 prefectures,this China became China as we know it, and simplified the writing system.          <title>The Sui Dynasty</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-The Sui Dynasty ruled from  A.D. 581 to 618.<br>-The first ruler,Yang Jian, united most of northern and southern China after almost 400 years of a civil war.<br>-Yang Jian made a new law code, built a new capital, and promoted Buddhism.<br>-The next ruler built the first Grand Canal, for shipping products, which extended almost 1,200 miles.<br>-They tried and failed to conquer Korea and Manchuria.<br>-Korea defeated the Sui military in 612 and the Chinese people revolted against the Sui. <br>-In 615, they were defeated again by the Eastern Turks.<br>-The ruler was assassinated in 618, and the Sui dynasty came to an end.<br><br>Hardy, Grant.          <title>The Tang Dynasty</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-The Tang Dynasty existed between 618 A.D. and 900 A.D.<br>-Kao-tsu, the first emperor, gave all male adults who paid taxes an equal amount of land, created a money system of copper coins and silk ribbon,and wrote a set of long-lasting-laws.<br>-The ruler's son eliminated all enemies of the Tang, before eliminating his family and overtook the throne.<br>-Tai-tsung started the Golden Age of China.<br>-He shrank the government, and used the money left over to buy and store food.          <description><![CDATA[<div>-The Song Dynasty ruled from 960 to 1279.<br>-They built more buildings and expanded their commercialism.<br>-More efficient farming practices and different varieties of rice were discovered.<br>-They invented an early handheld gun and a movable type used for printing. They also advanced their knowledge in shipbuilding, tea processing, porcelain manufacture, and metalworking.<br>-Chinese culture and education prospered.<br>-Government officials were tested on their literary skills and knowledge of classical Confucian philosophy before being hired. <br>-The philosopher Zhu Xi developed Neo-Confucianism, which combined the morality of Confucianism with elements of Buddhism and Taoism. The Song dynasty established this as the official state philosophy, and all other later Chinese dynasties continued to practice it.<br>-The Song became the world's first government to use paper money as a standard form of currency. <br>- The dynasty that ruled from 960 to 1127 is called the Northern Song, and the dynasty that ruled after 1127 is called the Southern Song. <br>-In 1279, the Song dynasty ended when the Mongols conquered China.<br><br>Hardy, Grant.          <description><![CDATA[<div>-The Shang were skilled at making things with bone, jade, ceramics, stone, wood, shells and bronze.<br>-They were farmers, using the Yangtze and Yellow rivers to water their crops.<br>-SILK! They were able to use silk worms to create silk, which was a fantastic invention.<br>-They had a social pyramid, like many other civilizations. The king was at the top, then military leaders, priests, merchants and farmers. <br>-Different classes were buried differently. Some tomb-builders were buried alive with the important people.<br>-People worshiped many gods.<br>-During this time families worshiped their ancestors. They wanted to please them in order to receive good luck, if they failed to do so they had bad luck.<br>-They all worshiped Shang Ti, who was believed to be the link between people and other less-powerful gods and also between humans and the spirits of the dead.<br>-King Zhou and many battles with nomads and rivaling tribes weakened the dynasty.
