I have a child to the man who abused me, he was not abusive before the baby, just insecure. When the baby was born he felt he had a hold over me and began to feel that the baby was taking up ‘his time’ with me. If the baby woke him at night he would push my head into the wall, and he would scream at the baby if she woke him while she was playing in the morning. I stayed though because I believed that he would change when she got older.

One day she was singing to a show on TV when he snapped out of bed and began screaming at her, I told him to quit it and he flew at me. He hit me hard enough to black both my eyes. All I knew was that I had to stand up for my child. I left him that day and he has not been interested in us since.

I was 19 when I started dating my now ex-boyfriend. At first he seemed charming, witty, funny, and adventurous. I fell in love with him right away.

For the first couple of months everything was great, but then the fights started – at first over very petty things, like my not having a special ringtone for him on my phone.

It escalated into things about my behaviour – suddenly everything I was doing was wrong, and I found myself apologising to him several times a day for things I did that upset him, which was nearly everything.

I felt like I was walking on eggshells around him because literally anything I said or did could upset him.

Later, after discovering that he had been sleeping with an ex-girlfriend of his, we fought more than ever. Somehow I held the blame for this too, but yet I still stayed with him. Eventually, we even moved in together.

After thinking that we had finally gotten things right, he left me abruptly. And I found myself alone and with no friends.

I was once in an emotionally abusive relationship. He changed once we moved in together – before that I thought he was a really nice guy, but unfortunately his pattern of behaviour changed. I hope that this stage of manipulation would pass and I certainly found out how naive I was.
The type that I didn’t know the meaning of a little bit of privacy, always looking through my things, questioning my activities, questioning me about my past, consistently brought me down about my weight, compared me to his ex-wife, called me names and his actions made me feel wrong about everything.
He’d even ignore me as soon as he walked through the front door, not even a hello, – it was like I didn’t exist except when he wanted something.
Falling in love doesn’t mean the guy is right for you, because any form of abuse should be taken very seriously.
Eventually, I withdrew and kept everything to myself and I even started to get depressed, at one time I didn’t know who I was anymore. It was so subtle – he stole my self esteem

At first my boyfriend was so considerate, and overly friendly. Once we started dating he started to accuse me of cheating on him, and would call me a ‘slut’. He would repeatedly call to “check-up” on me.

When he saw me dancing with a male friend in the disco , he grabbed my arm and I fell down a flight of steps trying to get away from him. One night, he held me down and wouldn’t let me leave his house.

The worst part was that I went along with everything. He would break up with me, and then I would take him back. He blamed me for his behavior, saying that if I was trustable, he wouldn’t have to check on me. He would ask my friends if I was trustworthy and would check to see if my car was at work.

Many times women believe that they would recognize abuse, I believed that.

I am an educated woman, from a good family, with a job, and a secure future. I never thought I would end up in an abusive relationship.
