If they are able to explain the task, or directions and are not following through they may be disregarding the directive to try to escape the activity. If they are unable to explain the directions, this may be a sign that they did not understand the task.

If the student gets up from their desk seeking a hug, they could request one using their preferred method of communication.

How do we cover their minutes when they have a task to complete and it is interrupted by a behavior thus going unfinished by the time the minutes are up and we have to transition to the next task?

—

This is a great conversation opportunity with the case manager. If the student begins engaging in behavior, their schedule could stop until they are regulated again. When calm, the student would re-engage with the original demand. If this would impede with other student schedules that you are supporting, communicate with teachers on the best coverage plan so the demand can be followed through.

When a student wants any kind of reaction whether it be the student they are bothering or the teacher/para, how can we help break that behavior of poking fun at the other student for that reaction? The part that is most difficult is that if the other student does what they’re supposed to and verbally tells the student to give them space and please stop, the student bothering them gets the reaction they want and if we as teachers/paras step in, they again get what they want.

--

This would be a great opportunity to practice planned ignoring. This is where we plan to ignore the undesired behavior. Other students and staff will all need to be participating in this planned ignoring. You can also use visual barriers to separate the student form others if necessary.
