Diary entries can have the purpose of self reflection to research papers that inform and educate others about current issues. The audience is different from readers who encounter a piece of writing. Audience is the group of people the writing is directed towards. Knowing the audience helps show "why" the author wrote a piece and helps focus and target a group of individuals making the writing more defined and meaningful.
