Who?-Many young children have this misconception.
Why- Young children have a lack of spatial awareness and are unable to see that the sun is fixed and does not orbitnthe Earth. Difficulty in imagining the Earth moving, but the children are able to see the movements of the Sun. E.g. the Sun rises in the morning, is the highest at noon and and sets in the evening.

History- It was not until the 16th century that Copernicus discovered the heliocentric image of the Earth.

Interactive lessons to teach students the movements of the planets.
Students role-playing as the Sun, Earth and Moon to grasp the concept of the orbiting of planets.
1. Assess any preconceptions to determine the level of teaching required.
2. Using demonstrations to aid students in imagining and understanding the concept of how the Earth rotates and moves around the Sun.
3. Revisit misconceptions as often as you can to further the understanding by learners.
4. Assess and reassess the validity of student concepts, assimilation of this differing knowledge may take time.
