The discrimination they have faced has occurred in residential schools, associated with the number of missing and murdered Indigenous women, and colonialization. The systematic racism that currently exists in Canadian culture limits the opportunities Indigenous people faces especially in education. Some Canadian can be ignorant to the current discrimination and systematic racism they continue to face.

After talking to a mother of one of my Grade 3 students, she graciously put me in contact with an Elder in her community who does School Outreach and comes to classrooms. This mother used to work as a liaison between people of Indigenous origin and the schools, she has told me I can message her anytime with questions I may have. I feel like she is a wealth of knowledge that I can tap into when I am unsure how to present something of Indigenous heritage to my class.

I had limited knowledge about the Indigenous culture and thought I knew enough to understand it. Today, I've realized I knew very little and I missed on lots of interesting and educational information that I was totally ignoring before. My husband, who is an administrator, does share a lot of stories with me, and we are both seeking more knowledge about the matter to better educate future generations.

I would love to have a series of activities in hand that I would engage my students in, to celebrate, remember and learn about the Indigenous people.

I think the knowledge and learning can always be shared as a form of conversations and discussions in class, giving the students opportunities to practise oral communication. With stories to share and many articles to read, I am positive that the students will be very much engaged and motivated to learning more with me.
In languages, we can incorporate reading articles and writing letters or researches about the Indigenous People. In history, we can talk about timelines, about Residential schools and about political issues that influenced and changed the life of the Indigenous people. In Social Sciences (World Cultures) we can bring out the topic of the Indigenous Culture and exploring it more in depth.

I know a few things, such as a bit about Indigenous medicine. From what I learned, Indigenous peoples use things found in nature to create medicine. For example, using cedar leaves to create a tea packed with vitamin C! (This cured scurvy in european explorers... ). I also know about the use of plants for spiritual purposes, such as White Sage for cleansing and purification, Lavender for positive energy, and Rosemary for mental clarity.

I would love to learn more about the use of these herbs and plants in smudging, and would love to hear from an elder to gain more knowledge on this. At my University we used to have elders come in and demonstrate smudging, and I definitely want to learn more. I also want to know more about traditions such as storytelling, and would love to hear these straight from an Indidenous elder.

I would love to try and get a guest speaker in next year of Indigenous descent to talk to my class about Indigenous traditions. Specifically if I am teaching science next year I have been wanting to incorporate an indigenous medicine unit in my class. I also think it is important to include Indigenous perspectives in all my classes, and continue my personal education on the topic so that I can better incorporate this into my classroom.
