The Japanese military and Chinese citizens were involved in the Nanking Massacre. The Japanese were invading China, and they attacked Nanking, killing and raping tens of thousands of citizens. The reason for this was because of the short supply the Japanese had. And because its a safe zone there must've been a ton of resources for the people. After the deaths of a lot of chinese people, 200,000 to 300,000 people died in a area only as big as New York's Central Park.

The U.S., being dependent on China as a market for its goods decided to start a trade embargo against Japan in order to get Japan to back off. This backfires, as Japan refused and the U.S. cut off all oil to there entirely. Japan was under the assumption that the United States would instantly forfeit due to the depth of their loss, but this enraged the U.S. instead and caused them to join the war on the side of the allies.
