Today, organic farming plays an increasingly bigger role on the world’s agricultural stage.

In the European Union, the use of organic agricultural land has almost doubled in recent years.

EU citizens are also increasing their demand for organic products. Europe is the second largest market in the world, worth €22.7 billion.

Germans, French and British are the biggest consumers.

Organic farming is often seen as a solution to feeding a growing global population and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.

Critics, however, suggest that organic yields are on average 20 to 25% lower than those of conventional farms.

More land to produce the same amount of food is needed, resulting in more deforestation and biodiversity loss.

Organic farming prohibits animal mutilation, with exceptions for traditional practices like caponization. Transport should be gentle, avoiding electrical stimulation and allopathic tranquilizers.
Manure management is essential to prevent soil contamination, with a limit of 170kg of nitrogen per hectare.
Animal housing must provide adequate space, access to food, water, and clean resting areas. All animals need access to open air or vegetation-covered areas, except in extreme weather or physiological conditions.
Final phase indoor confinement is allowed for a maximum of three months, not exceeding one-fifth of their lifespan. Poultry cannot be kept in cages and should have outdoor access for one-third of their lifetime. Minimum dimensions vary by species.

In organic cultivation, fertilisation should aim to restore or raise soil productivity. Commercial fertilisers are not recommended. Liquid earthworm humus, compost and green manure are better options. Crop rotation controls pests and diseases and improves soil health and fertility. Weed control can be achieved through balanced nutrition, authorised insecticides, biological control, and mulching.
