1. Avoid the conventional label we put on LGBTQ+ community.

For instance, we should avoid using keywords such as “abnormal”, “marginalized”, “mysterious”, “excluded”, and “vulnerable”.

Bias can exist in multiple forms, negative, or positive, both are possible. Among which positive bias is likely to be ignored by either the interviewer or the audience. “Abnormal”, and “Mysterious” are two common negative bias, which are also obvious. They are usually put on LGBTQ+ community by major Chinese society. All 'keywords' listed above are tags that generate by people who are delighted to understand homosexual people. However, surprisingly these stereotypes, which are seemingly the product of single-perspective story, are not noticed in most of the cases. Notably, these labels promote the isolation of LGBTQ+ community, through adding the distance among them and the so-called “majority”. Hence, getting rid of tags is a very prior objective that project researchers are expected to achieve. Beyond of it, categorizing people into certain type of groups has actually been a phenomenon in the society. Sorting living beings into rough and rigid “ism” instead of digging into the individuals is the biggest failure that can happen on a journalist.

2: Receive CONSENT. Avoid digging into detailed/personal information that the interviewee is uncomfortable to reveal. Accurately deliver interviewee’s opinion. Avoid disclosure of interviewees’ identities if they are not willing to.

Topics around LGBTQ+ community can get slightly bit sensitive sometimes, especially under the Chinese cultural background it is sometimes hard to full-heartedly express everything. We will be extra careful throughout the whole course of the project. First, When conducting interviews, we should seek a balance between getting necessary information and protecting the personal details based on informed consent and voluntary participation. Following interviews, the subsequent presentation of stories should be kept objective, and we must not disclose any information that was asked to be kept confidential. Last but not least, our work should be reviewed and approved by the interviewees before we release it to the public.

3. Avoid intentionally adding personal critique upon Chinese traditional educational system. (Specifically, Chinese conventional mindset)

The research is going to explore the influences brought by Chinese traditional thinking on the way LGBTQ+ community people present their stories. Indeed, this intention is likely to provoke a immediate subconscious bias that Chinese traditional educational system is oppressing LGBTQ+ community. However, pure conduction of the story, sole conveying of the idea are always the first discipline for journalist. We shall not superimpose our perspectives upon neither the subject of the investigation nor the background.

We have picked a sensitive topic under today’s Chinese society background, the LGBTQ+ community. The aim of the project is to eliminate the boundary between community of LGBTQ+ and so called “normal people”. More specifically, we are looking to let people aware sexual preference is not supposed to be the thing that contribute to the gap among individuals. Human beings are complicated existence, and sexual preference is too tiny to be someone’s signature.

We ardently and heartedly wish that one day, we shall embrace the equality and zero discrimination, and the sexual preference will not be a label on anyone.

I was mostly inspired from the article, which is called “Against the Ready Made Narratives” written by Sarazad, provided by our English teacher Chaya. The article mentions a concept, the ready made narratives, which refers to the stereotype generated under the advertisement of mainstream media. I suddenly realize the so-called LGBTQ+ community is also a ready made narrative. Why we need to separate a community for LGBTQ+ people? How can sexual preference becomes the reason of rising of the boundaries between people? Initially I was thinking to advocate to treat people with minor sexual preference equally. Now I am looking to let the public not to include sexual preference as a label sticks on people’s face.

I got to know Alex personally from FP Project Week. I have heard friends talking about his sexual orientation, but I have never seriously sit down and dig deeper into the stories behind it. After starting this project I often wonder that if I did not have this opportunity to look beyond the surface, how much less would I know about my friend and the concerns revolving around LGBTQ+ teenagers under Chinese traditional education system. Getting to know his experience and perspectives around our topic of choice really gave me a more in-depth and thorough understanding of the topic, in terms of not only how Chinese traditional education exerts pressure on LGBTQ+ teenagers, but also about consequences of lack of sex education, parental protection and awareness of self-protection during relationships. The interview has been inspiring in general, and some particular moments have refreshed or overturned my knowledge by provision of Alex's personal insights into the LGBTQ+ community. The details will lead us to consider about employments of certain 'lens language' and the sort of approaches to stories as we undertake the project.

We will present our project in two forms, one is video, and another one is article recording the conversation with out interviewees. In the first half of the video, we will not post anything content relate to LGBTQ+, instead, we are managing to collect “a vivid moment” from groups of people. A vivid moment here refers to videos or pictures that record anything that relate to one’s life. Like a recording of an exciting basketball game, the picture of their favorite book, etc. Through it, we simple want to show the life of different people, presenting everyone’s vitality and uniqueness as an individual. In the later half of the video, we will not post any images. We will put a simple line onto the screen, stating the sexual preferences of all the people appeared in the video. Finally, we will have the audio again from people who kindly give us their recordings. And the audio will be like, “I want to be called as a chemistry enthusiast” “the biggest signature for me is a big fan of dogs and cats”. Stating in which way they would love to be known, and in what way they wish their story to be presented.

In the article part, we will further discuss the effect brought by minor sexual preference with our interviewees. Revealing their concern as they are living in a society that has not reach absolute equality.

Through the project, we are seeking to give people more freedom in presenting their story, instead of limiting in their sexual preference, and being tagged because of that.
