The French Revolution started because of a inequality in the class system in France. The wealthy did not have to pay taxes only the third estate was required to pay taxes. The first and second Estates owned all the land there was limited land for the third estate live on. The kings continued to spend money on the first and second estate rather than on the third estate. King Louis XIV sent the country into debt because of extravagant projects and King Louis XVI is indecisive and does not stand up for his people. The people want change all three estates get notebooks to write down a list of issues for the meeting in May. But there was a voting problem. There were two estates against one. The third and second estates will always outvote the third estate two to one. The third estate wanted the estates to meet together as a single and be counted by a head count. The third estate eventually changed to the National Assembly. Robespierre a advocate for the third estate believed that France should establish a republic form of government a government known as being incorruptible.

After some time passes at the National Assembly the doors are locked. The third estate could not get into the palace through the front so they gather at a nearby tennis court instead and take the Tennis Court Oath. They promise not to leave until a constitution for the free people of France has been written.King Louis XVI decides to station army in the cities to prevent people from rising up. The commoners feel this is a attack on their rights by King Louis XVI. The commoners attempted to rise up against the soldiers at Bastille. The commoners succeeded in freeing political prisoners and gaining weapons from the armory. Women march on the palace of Versailles they are angry over the price of bread. They thought the queen was hoarding all the wheat. The people blame the queen just as much as they blame the king for all their problems.

King Louis XVI attempted at a legislative government but he was a weak leader. Louis XVI were executed for treason by neglecting the people and attempting to launch a counter revolution against the people. Robespierre leads France into its third government the first republic. One of the main reasons the "Reign of Terror" happened because Robespierre believed in order to have the republic he envisioned he had to be excessively violent. He starts the process of killing anyone who spoke against the revolution. There was 70,000 people put to death by Robespierre and the guillotine. Robespierre wanted a republic government but in the process of trying to create one he became a dictator. He is put to death and the Reign of Terror ends. After Robespierre is put to death The Directory becomes the new government. Napoleon a military genius overthrows the Directory and names himself consul for life.
