He steals food from the NKVD to give to Lina for her family even though he knows he could be killed for it. In the trucks on the way to the camps he was always helping Jonas and Jonas knew that he would always be there for him. Andrius’ mother also depends on him for support. He is the one there for her when her face was cut up and bruised and she tried her hardest to keep him with her when they were being sold off. The drivers license represents dependable because you always have to have it. People depend on drivers licenses to show their identification, to drive, etc. To be able to go anywhere, you have to have it. Andrius wants to go a lot of places, especially out of the camp. The picture of the heart represents dependable because a lot of people depend on their heart without realizing it. He cares for all of the people he loves. The act of giving Lina the gem on the train car and making a joke shows that he genuinely cares for Lina and he isn’t just messing with her emotions. Andrius’ reaction to Lina calling his mother a spy also shows this because it proves that he really loves his mother and doesn’t want anyone talking about her. The picture of the baby smiling shows genuine because babies don’t know how to fake their emotions. For example, when Lina was able to get a shower and was upset about being groped, andrius responded with “Hey there was blonde under all of that dirt”. He knew this would make her laugh when she was obviously upset. A picture of a monkey is used because they are always trying to make humans laugh. At a zoo, the monkeys do tricks and they understand when they make a human happy. They continue doing that motion. Usually people are worn out and tired at the zoo and this is a fun surprise. A picture of the sun is used because it is often included in the imagery of a happy situation. He knows that he is the reason she has to go through these experiences and he hates himself for that. This is a documentary that I watched about sex trade in cambodia. It showcases girls whose parents have sold them off for their virginity or have sold them after this. Andrius’ mother isn’t a virgin, but the situation is very similar. He feels badly about himself for causing his mom to go through the experiences that she’s having. If he helps others it makes him feel better about himself and not only think that he’s a monster. I’m certain animal communities there is a strong bond throughout the animals and they help each other out. This picture of these lizards holding each other up shows exactly what andrius is thinking.
