This photo was taken at a store that sold new and fun trinkets, but also sold old refurbished items. In this picture you can see all of the sewing machines. They were clearly antiques, but they were well taken care of and made new. This idea of reusing old materials is a very hipster concept, arguably what makes hipsters who they are, that is shown in my research project. They reinvent vintage materials into modern day trends.

This picture depicts a row of old records. This was taken at a record shop in Sacramento. Not only did this shop sell records, but there were also record players, jukeboxes, and other antique music related items. Music is very prevalent in the hipster subculture, but how the music is experienced is just as important. This is why records are coming back into style, the demand for them is again increasing. This picture shows old records, but there are also new records that are now available for brand new albums of any genres. This shows how impactful hipsters are, an idea that is stressed very much in my research paper. In an era where music is now just what you buy on your phone, hipsters are bringing back this old traditions of experiencing music.

This is not considered graffiti because it was clearly meant to be in this tunnel, and was probably issues by the city in order to add character. This picture was taken in old Sacramento in a tunnel; what the picture doesn't show is that the entire tunnel is covered in art. Art and forms of expression are vital to the hipster subculture. When I was surveying hipsters about what they most liked about the subculture, and there were some people who primarily loved the art forms that are so celebrated by hipsters.

This picture was taken at University of California Berkeley. Berkeley is already a really liberal city, that happens to hold similar views to hipsters. The chalk on the ground is portraying a go green campaign. In fact, one of the students who goes there said that students are encouraged to use chalk to write progressive statements on the concrete around campus. This indirectly relates to my research on how hipsters view the environment and the green movements that are supported by hipsters.

Unfortunately, this photo is blurry, though I didn't realize that until after I left the location. This was taken in a thrift store. This is an iconic place for hipsters to shop. In fact, the flannel has become very trademark of the hipster culture. Much like other aspects of the hipster culture, what starts out as an original hipster trend soon become mainstream, that is the story of how the flannel became so popular again. This idea of influence is a large part of my research as it is also a large part of the subculture.

This was taken in Berkeley, California. Along the side of this store front is graffiti. This is different than just street art because it's usually not sanctioned by the city, although it still adds a lot of character. Sometimes, even though graffiti is considered illegal, there will be no penalty for it in order to create these masterpieces that tell so many different stories. There were no tags on this building, just different artists who came together to create art. Like I point out in my research, Art is a large part of the hipster community and is can be expressed through pieces of work like graffiti just as easily as it can be through art showcases. In fact, some would consider graffiti more of a hipster quality than professional art functions because it is widely considered outside of the mainstream.

This trolley is one way that people make it around the city. Usually in San Francisco, these trolleys are used for the overwhelming tourist population more than the residents. However, it still shows to eco-friendly transportation options, a vital part of my research into this subculture. There is also a metro called the BART that runs not only throughout San Francisco, but throughout the bay area as another way to cut down on traffic and carbon emissions.

This picture was taken in Modesto, California. Not only is this a coffee shop, a prominent symbol in the hipster subculture, but it is also a refurbished house. This is the ideal coffee shop for hipsters, because it is not a corporate business, the importance of this is highlighted in my research project. Also, it is locally run, so the proceeds for this coffee shop just goes back into the community. The 'buy local' trends has made a comeback recently, following the rise of the hipster.

It is no surprise to find coffee paired with hipsters. Iconic hipster places like Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco are known for not only their hipster population but their consumption of coffee as well. This picture was taken in Modesto, California, though any coffee shop could represent this piece. This relates to my research because coffee has not been directly influenced by hipsters, as coffee consumption is a normal part of anyone's day, but it has been paired with the hipster culture. Although, since hipsters often orient towards non corporate businesses, they would normally gravitate towards small-town coffee shops like the one portrayed in this photo.

My research and interviews showed that hipsters are very environmentally conscious, and many have converted to riding bikes instead of using cars in order to decrease carbon emissions. This photo was taken in Sand City. Even though this transportation could come in handy in a small city setting they are also useful in large city settings where taking a car places might take longer due to traffic. Many more cities are recognizing that citizens ride bike more frequently, so they are installing more bike racks. This is just another example of the positive hipster influence.

This picture was taken in Monterey, California. It shows a store front similar to the many around it, but I chose to take a picture of this one because of what they sold. They sold only vintage clothes. As shown in my research project, this is part of the hipster culture to take older style clothes and bring them back into style with the use of local shops such as this one. There was also a sign on the front of this tore (you can’t see in the picture) that says "vegan jackets". I was confused at first what this meant, but I figured out that it probably means fake leather jackets or other items that are not made out of animals. Something that I didn't include in my research, but is a small part of hipster culture is veganism. With the rise of hipsters has come the rise of vegans. In fact, it is predicted to be one of the biggest new trends in 2017. This is partially due to the influence of the hipster subculture.

This is another example of street art taken in Seattle, Washington. I noticed this wall while I was being driven through the city and saw the importance of the messages being portrayed. I wouldn't consider this street art graffiti because the overall art has a theme to it. In fact, the theme of the wall is one of activism and progression, very much hipster ideas as it relates to the political affect seen in my research. This is a very hipster visual because not only is there a message in the art, but it is being shown to the public. This is part of the activism and political liberalism that hipsters tend to lean towards. This also shows that even though hipster try to stay outside of the mainstream, with these important issues, they are vocal and speak to the main society.

There are a couple components in this picture. This picture was taken in Seattle, Washington at the original Starbucks. Again, the importance of coffee in the hipster community is very evident. Usually, hipsters do not contribute to corporate or mainstream coffee shops, as seen in my research, though Starbucks didn't start out in the mainstream. The most important aspect of this picture though, is the street performer. There were many people like this man in Seattle. Their main goal is to make money, but they also point out a specific part of the hipster community. I found in my research that hipsters are very passionate about different art forms, music included, and it is also important to share that with other people.

Seattle is a well-known location for the hipster community and the influences are everywhere. This market is pretty well known and is usually part of a tourist’s itinerary, but it's also for locals to buy good local food and to keep the money in the community. This relates to my research because this is an example of a hipster trend that has turned mainstream as many people from across the nation come to visit Pike's Place. Also, in the picture you can see that they have Eco-friendly rooftop gardens, probably contributing to some of the vendors on the inside.

This was actually a picture I took about a year ago when we were in Portland at an ice cream shop called Salt & Straw. When asked the question "What is the most misunderstood preconceived idea of the hipster that outside culture might have?", her answer out of the options was that hipsters are lazy and don't have jobs. When asked "What do you value most about hipster culture?", her answer was the activism. Finally, when asked "What part of being hipster do you enjoy most?", and she answered with the community and vibes that come along with it.
