This is why it's important to practice being culturally responsive. Minority children will feel left out if they don't understand what is going on. They will rebel and this is what gives the teachers the feeling that the students don't want to learn, but in reality they just can't connect. I found it a great idea to assign a different assignment other than an exam for a big grade. Students appreciate the break and will be able to express there feelings with a poem/rap or any other way. Students want to feel accepted so sometimes they will invest in their wardrobe. They just want to fit in. Another reason could be that they want to just boost their self esteem. This is very important for the teachers to understand the students. Kids will do things to spoil themselves. Who are we to judge? Something we learned in Classroom management is to make your classroom feel "homey." This helps the student feel connected and engaged. It makes the student want to learn. When you post positive messages in your classroom, you are able to make the students comfortable.
