by: Danielle D'Orazio and Madelynn

This response will evaluate how Rachel Platten uses strong word choice, symbolism, and theme in her song, “Fight Song”.

The words Rachel Platten uses in her song are very strong. In the song it says “like how a single word can make a heart open” This is strong because it explains how a single word can make you feel loved to feeling down or unloved. She is conveying that sometimes you will just need that one special person in your life to make you feel stronger. Some other powerful words Rachel uses is “I will scream them loud tonight, can you hear voice this time” She is trying to lead on that she will never give up until she is heard. Repetition is used a lot throughout the song as well, such as “Stating right now i’ll be strong” She repeats these word in the song to express that she will start to be strong and never stop. She uses repetition again in the words “This is my fight song, take back my life song, prove i’m alright song.” This use of repetition shows she will prove to everyone that she can make a difference and change without giving up.

In addition to powerful word choice and repetition Rachel Platten includes symbolism to convey that little things can make a big difference. In other words even though something is small and weak it can be very powerful. An example is “Like a small boat on the ocean sending big waves” This is symbolism because she's talking about how something very small like a boat making big waves. She also says “There’s a fire burning in my bones” This means that one little thing can make a burning sensation in your bones.

The themes in “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten is in life you should never stop fighting and be strong about who you are, and feeling confident of who you are. For example “A lot of left in me” she is confident that she will be a stronger person and she will change the world.

Fight Song by Rachel Platton Fight Song

Wings by Little Mix

By: Amika C. & Prina P.

This response will evaluate how Little Mix uses craft techniques of powerful word choice, theme, and symbolism throughout one of their most popular song “Wings”.

Little Mix uses powerful words that have inspirational meaning to them. For example, Little Mix tells you that you should not care what people think and you just have to listen to yourself and believe in yourself. Little Mix also says “Don’t let what they say keep you up at night”, this is inspirational because you don’t want people to tell you want to do. Follow your own dreams.

While they used powerful word choice, they also used symbolism. In their song they use the phrases, “ they’re just like water off my wings”and “I’m firing up the runway”. The first quote shows that if there is an obstacle in front of you forget about the obstacle and keep on going. Think about what you have to do and leave the obstacles behind so you can get to your goals faster. “I’m firing up the run” shows that you know that you are going to get to your goal someday and that you are almost there. If you keep on trying you will get there faster.

Another craft technique Little Mix uses is theme. In the song, Little Mix tells us that in life, you have to follow what your mind tells you what to do and don’t let people get in your way from following your dreams. And sometimes people may say things to hurt you but you have the power to brush it off your wings and fly.

In conclusion the band Little Mix reminds us that if there are obstacles in front of you ignore them and just keep on going. You will get to your goal one day. You can't let people give you negative feedback that will make you stop from trying. They use powerful word choice, symbolism, and theme to show this.

You belong with me, Taylor Swift

By: Bianca Robinson & Allison Leckerman 11/1/16 Period

This response will evaluate how Taylor Swift's song “You Belong With Me” uses powerful word choice, repetition, theme, symbolism, and imagery throughout the song.

Taylor Swift uses powerful word choice to reveal that she is worth noticing and that the boy is missing out on something amazing, like when she quotes “But she wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts, she's cheer captain and i'm on the bleachers”. She is saying that the other girl is more prettier than she is.

Throughout Taylor Swift song there is millions of repetition showing her point that she loves the boy some examples are “you belong with me, she's cheer captain and i'm on the bleachers, and can’t you see that i’m the one who understands you”.

In Taylor Swift's song “You belong with me” uses imagery. I think that she uses imagery because she wants to show how upset she is and wants to make the listener feel how she was feeling and make the listener know how she was feeling be seeing what it was like and how if it was you how would you feel about it. The imagery she used was “But she wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts, She's cheer captain, And I'm on the bleachers” and that shows how she is different from his girlfriend and how she thinks that she will never have a chance against her because they aren't even close to the same person and she wants her crush to realize she is better than his girlfriend and won't treat him how she did.

Also in the song “You Belong With Me” Taylor uses symbolism. She uses symbolism by in the song she say “Standing by your backdoor.” Which shows that she isn’t standing by his actually backdoor she means that she will always have his back when he needs her the most. And also when she says “I’m the one who make you laugh when you know you are about to cry. I know your favorite songs and you tell me about your dreams, think i know where you belong, think i know it's with me.” That shows that she doesn't really know his favorite songs and remembers all his dreams but she is saying that she knows him more than anyone else.

The theme of the song “You Belong With Me” is that if you try hard enough to get something, that something will try hard as well. Like when she said “Oh i remember you driving to my house in the middle of the night. I’m the one who makes you laugh when you know you are about to cry. I know your favorite songs and you tell me about your dreams think i know where you belong, Think i know it's with me.” And another theme could be that we you try then you will get there. That is sort of like the first theme but different in a way.

You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift You Belong with Me

Lips are Movin' by Meghan Trainor

By: Gunnar Seaman, Brendan Donnelly, and Michael Carfagno.

This response will evaluate how Meghan Trainor expertly uses the craft techniques like symbolism, word choice, and theme throughout her wonderful song “Lips are Moving”.

One of the craft techniques that Meghan Trainor uses is symbolism in her song “Lips are Movin”. She repeats the words “If your lips are moving, then you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby” to show that someone is speaking and you don’t want to hear it so you are just seeing them talk not hearing and the guy always repeats what he does. He just keeps talking and she does not want to hear it. She wants nothing to do with him and she is done with him and he keeps talking nicely to get her back. She knows whatever he says he will be lying to her. She does not want to hear it anymore because she knows it's going to be a lie no matter what. She wants to get out of his life with all of the lies.

Another technique that she uses is word choice. One example of this in the song is “Nah, I come from outer space” This is saying that she is out of this world, and she is not replaceable. She is expressing that the boy is taking her for granted and is telling her lies. Another one is “You're so two-faced, two-faced babe” Megan is saying that you act so nice to me but you act horribly when I’m not around. One other one is “You're full of something but it ain't love.” She is saying that he says he is not full of love but he’s really full of lies. The boy is hiding that he is lying by saying he is full of love.

The theme she uses in her hit song “Lips are Movin” is the importance of how she describes herself and how she is strong, independent, truthful, not worried, and brave. She says in the song “I might be young, but I ain’t stupid. Talking around in circles with your tongue. I gave you bass you gave me sweet talk. Saying how I’m your number one” This is said in the song because it describes how he plays her saying how she is number one, but in reality, he lies to her and keeps her wanting more. Also, she says “Tell me do you think I’m dumb?” The way he treats her is like she is dumb, he lies then gets her something or uses sweet talk. She is offended by this because she realizes what’s happening.

Etc. throughout the song, stressed out.

Twenty One pilots use certain word choice to express on how they had lots freedom when they were younger and now they have freedom, but too much work to do. They wish they were young again and didn’t have a care in the world. For example, using the phrase “Wish we could turn back time” and “When our momma sang us to sleep”.

Twenty-One Pilots uses the imagery of a smell that takes them back to a time of less stress, not worrying how to make money, and being young, free, and full of imagination and creativity. Twenty-One Pilots takes us back to what they used to do “Used to play pretend, give each other different names, We would build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away” and what they have to do now, “Wake up you need to make money” and this explains that they are barraged with responsibilities and are constantly told to make money and not express any creativity contrary to the first example which explains how they had no care in the world and could play all day with no worries.

In stressed out Twenty-One pilots say “When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out” This shows that now that they are older their mothers cannot sing them to sleep anymore because they are adults. In the song it says. “Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol' days” This symbolizes that when you get older and your parents cannot do everything for you, everything will get harder.

This song shows that when they were younger they weren’t as stressed out, but now that they are older they are very stressed out because they have a lot of stuff to do and such little time. For example when he says in the song “I’d make a candle out of it if i ever found it” meaning he could be immersed in the time of less stress with a permanent candle. In the song he wishes a lot in repetition to keep showing that he desires to go back to times of less stress, and when he was satisfied.

Conclusively, in the song stressed out by Twenty-One pilots they use lots of author’s craft techniques such as symbolism, theme, word choice. The song has a meaning in it and also made it sound amazingly good.

By Olivia Davidson & Danielle Fisher

“Fight Song” is about how the composer feels small and alone, but can make a big difference. This response will evaluate how Rachel Platton uses the author’s craft techniques of powerful word choice, symbolism, and theme throughout the song.

Rachel Platton uses powerful word choice like, “I will scream them loud tonight. Can you hear my voice this time?” She says this to convey to people how she doesn’t want to be ignored and longs for people to listen to her. Another quote from the song is, “And I don’t care if anyone else believes. Cause I still got a lot of fight in me.” This sentence talks about how Rachel won’t give in and won’t give up. As she pushes on through her fight, Rachel continues to persevere and strive to regain her life.

Some symbolism used throughout the song is when she said, “Like a small boat, on the ocean, sending big waves, into motion.” This is used as symbolism because it shows that no matter your size you can make a big and powerful difference. In life, you will always have people that think you can’t do something based on your physical structure, but Rachel is trying to prove that those things aren’t worth her concerns.

The theme illustrated in the song is that in life, it doesn’t matter how big or small your role is, you can make as big a difference as anyone if you put your mind to it. Rachel Platton describes this theme as she tries to solve her problem of being invisible and unnoticed.

In conclusion, Rachel Platton uses these author’s craft techniques to show how she fought to show people she won’t be ignored and will be heard.

One example of symbolism is “Nah, I come from outer space”. In this part of the song she is trying to explain that he won't find anyone like her.

In addition to using symbolism Meghan Trainor uses angry word choice to show how she can see right through you. An example of this is “You’re so two-faced, two-faced babe” He thinks he is sneaking and sly but she knows what he is doing. She is expressing how he can’t be trusted and is unloyal.

One last thing Meghan Trainor uses is theme. The theme in this song is trying to guide you to make the right choices about people. Sometimes in life people hurt you but you get back up. Don’t let them back in your life to hurt you again.

In conclusion Meghan Trainor wants everyone to know, no matter what gender, that you can do better than somebody who thought you were nothing before.

Fight Song By Rachel Platton

Laini Freese and Peyton Kintzley 11/1/16 Period;2

This response will evaluate how Rachel Platton expertly uses the craft techniques of symbolism, theme, and word choice throughout the song “ Fight Song”.

Rachel Platton uses theme throughout the song. The theme of the quotes we choose where how you can feel during a time of need, sadness, and frustration. In life, there can be some ups and downs and this song explains one of Rachel’s downs. The first quote we choose is “I might only have one match” This makes us think that she was having a devastating time with someone close to her. The next quote we choose was“Losing friends and I’m chasing sleep, Everybody's worried about me.” This makes us think she is trying not to get other people involved. She does not want other friendships to get ruined. These quotes tie into the theme that make us think how she is struggling through a hard time. Rachel is concerned about everybody worrying about her, causing her to lose sleep over the fact that she doesn’t need people to worry about her problems.

Although, she uses theme in the song “Fight Song”she also uses symbolism. Rachel uses “ wrecking balls in my brain”. This symbolism makes us think that she has a lot going on in her life right now and does not know exactly how to cope with it. She is trying to deal with it the as best she can. Another piece of symbolism is “And I don’t really care if nobody else believes”. This symbolism makes us think that she does not really care what other people think about her. We also think this might have to do with a person that did something to her and she does not care what they think about her anymore.

Finally, Rachel Platton uses word choice in “Fight Song.” The first line she uses is “My powers turned on, starting right now I will be strong.” This makes us think that she is ready to take on the next chapter in her life. She finally has the courage to take back her life. Also she says“Starting right now I will be strong” it shows that she is not going to stop fighting for what she wants no matter how difficult it gets for her because hard work will pay off for Rachel.

In conclusion, Rachel Platton reminds us that even if you are going through a rough time you are invincible and can do whatever you put your mind too. Although it might be really hard to cope with at first. Whatever you are going through you can only become stronger than what you were before.

Stressed Out Analysis

By Zach Miller, Ryan Dougherty, and Jonah Chapman
In the song, Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots, there are many examples of word choice, symbolism, and examples of themes throughout the song. These literary tools help carry the song from the beginning to the end and with every stanza in the song.

In the first four stanzas of the song Stressed Out, There are many examples of word choice and repetition. Two such examples are the phrases “ I wish” and “Wish we”. The phrases represents how Tyler Joseph, the author, wishes that his life was easier. He also wishes that he found a way to make his job and life less stressful. Other examples of words choice include the phrase “Wish we could turn back time to the good old days when our Momma sang us to sleep but now we’re Stressed out,”. The Author wants to state how he would like to go back to the past when he could relax with his family and friends, instead of being overcrowded with responsibilities. The phrases that they use show how they don’t want to grow up and be responsible.

In the song, Stressed Out, by Twenty One Pilots, they use symbolism to show that certain things and remind them of a time where they were young, carefree, and when they did not have responsibilities. Examples of imagery that they use are, “Same clothes homegrown a stone’s throw from a creek we use to roam, But it would remind us of when nothing really matter, Out of student loans and tree house homes we all would take the ladder.” These images show that there are certain objects or places that would remind them of when they were and did not have to be mature or have responsibilities. Another example of imagery they use is, “We used to play pretend, give each other different names. We” This shows that they were very imaginative, they just wanted to be kids and did not have to worry about supporting themselves or jobs. These symbols that they use show that they don’t want to let go of their childhood and grow up.

The song has many themes throughout the song that represent different moods. First, Overall there is a theme that goes with The repetitiveness of the word phrase “I wish” that shows the theme that the author, Tyler Joseph hopes of a better life he, wishes he could go back to when he was young and had no responsibilities and he was carefree. He didn't have to worry about much. A second theme is that you can not believe what people say because in the song he said “I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink. But now I’m insecure and I care what people think.” This theme shows that you cannot believe what people say. Another theme in the story is that when you grow older, you care more about what people think. That is why the theme carries the song from all area of the stories

In life, it can be difficult to grow up and let go of your childhood and feel the pressures of adulthood. From the beginning to the end of the song Tyler uses many examples of Author's Craft in the forms of word choice, symbolism, and themes throughout the song.

By: Ricky Cifelli and Nick Mckeon

Stressed Out by 21 Pilots

The songwriter of Stressed Out uses author’s crafts ideas like repetition, imagery, symbolism, theme, and strong word choice. He probably chooses to do this to make the listener feel his struggle and pain.

The authors craft that the songwriter first uses is repetition. He uses this to show hardships of being a singer. For example “ I wish I found some better words no one’s ever heard, I wish I had voice that sang some better words, I found some chords in an order that is new, I wish I didn’t have to rhyme every time I sang”. The songwriter probably uses these words to show what he wants to change, but he doesn’t do anything about it.

The second author's craft he uses is imagery. He uses this to try to make the listener feel his stress. For example “Same clothes homegrown a stone’s throw from a creek we used to roam”. He says this to show how good the old days were compared to the present day. The third authors craft idea the songwriter uses is symbolism. He uses the word money to symbolize how hard the responsibilities are of being an adult. For example “Saying wake up, you need to make money”. He uses this sentence to show how his family all contributed to make money.

The third author's craft is symbolism. He uses this to symbolize how he did not have a lot of money. For example”wake up, you need to make money”. He uses this to show while being an adult you gain the chore of earning money for living.

The fourth author's craft is theme. The theme is live your life the fullest as a young child because adulthood takes away all of your childhood freedoms and you have a lot of hardships. To prove this he uses these lines “We used to play pretend, give each other different names, we would build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away, used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing at our face, Saying “Wake up you need to make money”. He uses these lines to show how him and his brother lived their young lives to the fullest, but now they are stuck in adulthood and are facing the hardships and regimes of being an adult.

The final author's craft is strong word choice. He uses strong word choice to make the listener feel his stress. For example “When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out”. He uses this line because he wants to show when he was younger when he had a bad day his mother could sing him to sleep to make him feel better but now since he is older his mother can't sing him to sleep to make him feel better, he has to sit down and accept it.

So in conclusion the song writer uses authors craft to make the listener feel the conflict and torment of being an adult 21 Pilots has.

Benjamin Cave and Noah Stephenson

The band 21 Pilots use strong words, imagery and repetition in their song “Stressed Out”.
They use symbolism in the phrase “My names Blurryface and I care what you think”. He uses symbolism in that phrase because Blurryface is a character that is made of all their insecurities and is saying that they do care about what others think and how they judge them. This makes me think that this group is very insecure with themselves and it feels like they are very different from everyone else.

In the song “Stressed Out” the band 21 Pilots used powerful words to emphasize how they wanted to take the easy way out when they were children in the phrase “I wish I found some better sounds no one's ever heard I wish I had a better voice that sang some better words I wish I found some chords in an order that is new I wish I didn't have to rhyme every time I sang”. They also use repetition to emphasize that they want this to have happened and this makes me think they sort of lack responsibilities and want to take the easy way out.

One theme in the song “Stressed Out”is “ People eventually realize they have to grow up and become mature which means letting go of a childhood without responsibilities. Some phrases that support this theme are,“ wish we could turn back time, to the good old days when our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out” and “Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face saying, wake up, you need to make money”. These lyrics convey that they want to go back to their childhood but more importantly want no responsibilities. These phrases also reveal think that they want to go back to when they were young and had no responsibilities because they have to do work now and make money.

In conclusion, The 21 Pilots use many skills like strong word choice, symbolism and a theme in their song to make it enjoyable for the listener and paints the picture of people not wanting to grow up and more importantly not wanting responsibilities.

Blair and Cole Response

This response will evaluate how Twenty One Pilots utilizes the craft techniques of repetition, symbolism, and imagery. Twenty one pilots is a band that was formed in 2009, the two guys in the band are Tyler Joseph and Josh Dunn. Tyler came up with the band's name while studying All My Sons by Arthur Miller, a play about a man who must decide what is best for his family after causing the death of twenty-one pilots during World War II because he knowingly sent them faulty plane parts for the economic good of his business. Tyler explained that this story of moral dilemma was the inspiration for the name of the band.

Twenty One Pilots utilizes symbols in their song Stressed Out that represent that they want to be kids. For example some symbols that represent their childhood are the tree house and the creek they used to roam.” this symbols remind the band of a time when they didn't have responsibilities it also represents “We used turn back time to good ol’ days”. It shows that they want to retrocede, or go back to when they had no worries about anything because they were kids. Being an adult is too hard for them and they wish they could stay at a young age. They show hints throughout the song that they are either stressed out or worried about the future. Around the middle of the song there is a line stating “We’re stressed out” This phrase is the meaning of the whole song, or the theme. This one verse is very powerful. It’s saying that adulthood is like the starting point of stress and how they’re. That verse also says that they really WANT to be kids and that being a child is the most amusing point in your whole lifetime. As a kid you had no worries and no responsibilities. As symbolism it says in the song “I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink, but now i'm insecure and I care what people think” this shows when they were younger they cared less what people thought but now they're older and care what everyone think of them.

Twenty One Pilots use the repetition phrase “I wish” to show that they want to be heard and being able to overcome their imperfections. In the stanza that says “I wish” the word phrases better sounds, better voice, new chords, and don’t have to rhyme. To give us an understanding that they’re talking about music. Twenty One Pilots uses the phrase “My name’s ‘Blurryface’ and I care what you think” to say that other’s can’t see their success as artists and that people are judging them which causes them to get insecure.

Twenty One pilots successfully uses theme in their song. The song says in the lyrics “We would build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away” this phrase tells the reader or listener that they wish to fly away from all their worries and adulthood. “Used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing at our face.” It shows theme by showing that they dreamed of being bigger and had other dreams that were crushed.

By Dylan Phan and Ivan Volkov

The song “Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots uses theme, symbolism, and imagery. To show that he wants to be a kid again, where you don’t need to worry about what people think about you and you get to do whatever you want to a limit.

A couple of the phrases in this song were theme, which shows what the song was written about. Some of the phrases used were “ Saying, wake up, you need to make money” and “We used to play pretend, give each other different names, We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away, Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face, Saying, "Wake up, you need to make money." The first phrase shows that now everyone is telling him that he needs to grow up and get a job like everyone else. It is showing that he misses doing all that fun stuff as a kid. The second phrase is showing that he did all that fun stuff as a kid. He still wants to do those things, but if he does, people are going to think that there is something wrong with him.

Another skill that is used in this song is symbolism. Some of the phrases are “My name's 'Blurryface' and I care what you think.” and “We're stressed out.” The first quote shows that he cares what others think about him and he wants people to not notice him so that they don’t judge him. The second one shows that he is worried about what others think too much. He wishes that he was still a kid where what others thought about him didn’t matter.

The song twenty one pilots has lots of imagery for example like “Sometimes a certain smell will take me back to when I was young” it tells me that some smells that he smells he remembers the time when he was young like playing with friends

or the family. Theirs is more of imagery like “It'd be to my brother, 'cause we have the same nose, Same clothes homegrown a stone's throw from a creek we used to roam, But it would remind us of when nothing really mattered, Out of student loans and treehouse homes we all would take the latter.”This show me that the singer is telling us that he was real close to him and they almost looked alike to his friend and

In conclusion, Twenty One pilots uses author’s craft like theme, symbolism, and imagery to prove the point that sometimes, it is hard to let go of your childhood.
