"To have love without holding" by Marge Piercy portrays the complexity of love through the use of enjambment, simile, alliteration, metaphor, and Chremamorphism. It creates an intense and passionate tone, which draws the readers in and uses emotive language and strong imagery to portray to the readers the emotions the speaker is feeling.

"I can't do it, you say it's killing me, but you thrive." Using onomatopoeia, the line 'roaring and whimpering in the rooms' Piercy conveys how love can be big and wild or small and meek. The purpose of this line is to example how juxtapositions can show the contrasting side of love. 

Enjambment is used in 'love with the doors.....' to create a feeling of being rushed with rising emotion. chrememorphism when Marge Piercy describes love as if "made of wet plaster" which implies that love is soft and weak. Then it progressively sharper as it gets hurt more because love is vulnerable having opened up. Using the repetition of the word knives, the speaker again shows the progress of love going from a blunt knife to a sharper one the more that it is hurt.
