You get many different perspectives on your writing.

When you critique the writing of others, it helps you learn what to look for in your own.

You learn what things you may need to expand upon more, because even though you might understand what you're writing about, it's not always as clear to the reader.

You realize that there is always room for improvement, no matter how great you may think your piece is.

You discover your strong points. Everyone tends to compliment what they like, and if you get many of the same compliments, you know what you're doing that works.

1. Teachers can provided one on one attention which allows assistance to students at all learning levels.
2. Does not put pressure on students who may be behind. Instead they are receiving the assistance they need.
3. Students are able to use any mode of writing rather than focusing on one mode.
4. This allows students to be at any point in the writing process of their writing that they're working on during writing workshop time. Then they're given individual assistance rather than whole group instruction that requires all students to be at the same point.

Can be used as a mentor text. Mentor texts are books that the teacher knows and loves which is then used to teach a mini-lesson. This can be used in the mini lesson to give the students an example of how the technique is used in real writing. Such as using the book The Recess Queen to teach the writing technique of using onomatopoeia to evoke feelings in writing that they can then use in their writing during writing workshop.
When using mentor texts, consider books that:

Provide outstanding models that will help children grow as writers

Are culturally diverse

Provide opportunities for children to explore language

Students can use quality children's literature to use as a reference while they are trying out a technique. This can be a mentor text that you choose or if a student notices this technique being used in a book they have read themselves, they can use it as a guide. They can have the book in front of them as they write to guide them on how they can use the technique in their own writing or use it as an influence to try a different variation of how the author used it. This is great because it is teaching students to identify the trait in literature and how to identify their own mentor texts.

As mentioned in part b all students may be at different levels of writing which with writing workshop is okay. Quality children's picture books can be used with students who may not even be at the writing stage yet. Picture books without words can still be used to tell a story. These books can be used as mentor texts or as a guide for children who aren't quite at the writing stage yet. During independent writing time, they can draw pictures to represent their story using the picture books as a reference. During talk and share time they can orally tell their story based on the pictures they drew.
