Creating Compassion Culture by AishaAslam

Please pour in your ideas as to how we can cultivate compassion culture in our middle schoolers. Our deen is all about compassion for the fellow beings (humans and beyond). Beloved Prophet Alayhissalam was sent as mercy for us all. We CANNOT be BUT kind!!Share any quotes, powerful images, activities that we could run throughout the year. The idea is to harness the high energy of this age group (11-13 yrs) and guide them to be more kind, accepting and compassionate towards one another. Our objective is to create a compassion culture where no child bullies another, and no adult (teachers and others) would EVER humiliate, label or disrespect the child on the basis of their grades, or any other reasons. Compassion culture is a culture where effort matters and rough days become a little easier with a smile or a kind word said by a fellow human. So, let's get started team. Pour in your ideas. We will have quotes, images etc posted around the walls in our section and will work on our own communication and choice of words to be more kind and compassionate towards each other and towards the students. Let's do this !

We can create different projects in math and science where students sit in groups and try to experiment. they work together and while they do they learn to talk, sit and try ideas to promote collaboration and patience while learning. While they are doing these activities, we can tell them ahadees related to compassion, love for each other, patience and good akhlaq.
1. Ask students to design a tower using squares, triangles, rectangles, and/or other shapes the class is studying. The tower should be as tall as possible and still be able to hold up a ping pong ball. Materials can consist of whatever items you have in your classroom (straws, pipe cleaners, tape, paper clips, craft sticks, etc . . .). Discussion questions might include: How do engineers design towers? What shapes do most towers have incorporated into their design? When do towers need to hold up lots of weight? When do they need to be tall?
2. Students examine ecosystems in this lesson. Working in groups they make a list of what they would need to live in the classroom for different time increments, including a day, week, and year. They discuss worldwide use of resources. They discuss how much paper is wasted in their class, and ways to reduce usage.
3. Which Type of Ball Bounces the Highest?
In this fun experiment students use various balls to determine which one bounces the highest. They then graph the results.

Haya Sajid - Compassionate Culture

Thinking of how to create a compassionate culture among students in order to engrave it in rest of their lives as a global responsibility, I see it as not only being compassionate towards humans but also training them to show compassion towards their work, the environment, animals and themselves. Now it brings me to come up with a few ideas that can leave an impact on them: In order to pen down various ways to build empathy that is a part of compassion we need to understand that each student has a different learning style, so collaborating all the inputs together pointing the same and the most important behavior can be a great success. Every students has a different learning style: They learn through different mediums and we need to input accordingly. They learn through the sense of sight, sense of hearing, sense of touch that refers to practical activities in my view point, and the most important thing that makes all these efforts impactful is the behavior of a teacher (Practically demonstrating the behavior we want them to keep while treating others). Now keeping all these ways of learning few things that I believe may work are:

1)Eye catchy visuals - Put the sayings of the greatest man on earth - Our beloved Messenger Muhammad (S.A.W.W) on the soft board along with the tips of how to use those words in our lives. To make this impactful telling through activities and demonstrating the importance of following Rasoolullah (S.A.W.W) may help.

Note: I will attach the way I already put it up on the board last year and received a great response from the students

2) Extracting lessons from the life of the Prophet (PBUH) - While teaching the Seerah, Tareekh we get a lot to analyze how Rasoolullah (PBUH) used to show compassion, wisdom while treating his companions and enemies (Ask students to do the analysis). The prophet (PBUH) life revolved around his care towards the Ummah

3) Practical Demonstration - Here comes the responsibility of a teacher on how she treats the students - This can be done by eliminating few behaviors and ad some kind ways to help students in need - Because the purpose is not to only teach but train them.

The teachers do bully students in many ways so if there is a student who is a slow learner or is a bit careless or showing low grades should be treated equally as the one who get highest grades, even this student needs extra care and needs a teacher to understand his/her problem and show empathy while eliminating the behavior of insulting a student verbally or physically punishing the student in front of the whole class. Now a positive environment can be created by creating a bond between a teacher and a student by saying a few words like "I believe you can do much more it's just that you need to believe in yourself" or by telling a strength of that student and make them believe that they can do everything. I believe showing such behavior do eliminate the practice of bullying the one who is weak.

4) Cooperative learning - Practice and encouraging Cooperative learning may help students connect with each other - Here different techniques can be used in Tarbiyah lessons like "Onion Ring Technique" with the topic of "Finding Self Strengths" then directing this activity towards how these strengths can lead us to succeed in the eyes of Allah - Along with this it's the first step of creating a positive bond of each student in the eyes of the classmates - Creating the thing in their hearts that one can not only shine on the basis of grades but every individual has a strength.
Cooperative learning techniques can be helpful in training the students by giving the example of how Rasoolullah (PBUH) made treaties with wisdom and what behavior he kept to lead this Ummah collaborating with his companions.

5) Creating a club that involve in the acts of kindness towards people outside the classroom or the school - We can create a club that will encourage students to go out of the way for people who are less privilege - Trips can be taken to orphanages, to SOS village with things, crafts, arts, food made in love for them. - On a broader level students can pour in their ideas for what they can do for others on such trips according to their capacity

6) Gardening - Gardening is one activity that is fun and also help students care for the environment aswell because along with humans there is a need of building compassion towards our environment.

Farwa Zahra
Science has always been thought as a deadly weapon destroying the planet but to me its a key to find a way to cure diseases, to heal, to console the gloomy hearts of sufferers and to bring hope among the hopeless. It can remove racism as we all are same. It increases awareness about the scientifically proven side effects of major social issues such as bullying, racism etc. It can promote compassion culture by showing the positive effects of compassion, gratitude and kindness on our brain and body. So by incorporating compassion in science we can creat a better place to live with more socially responsible and educated people
