1. Aligning nurse-led research with public need

-Quality nurse-led research focuses on the issues most important to those who use, work in and manage health and care services, and succeeds in realising impact.

2. Releasing nurses’ research potential

-To empower nurses to lead, use, deliver and participate in research as part of their job. Finding ways to boost the nursing voice, profile and involvement in decision making in forums related to research locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

3. Building the best research system

-Aim is to make England the best place for nurses to lead, deliver and get involved in cutting-edge research. Support delivery of the NIHR Senior Research Leader: Nursing and Midwifery programme by offering regional and national internship opportunities.

4. Developing future nurse leaders of research

-The vision is to offer rewarding opportunities and sustainable careers that support growth in the number and diversity of nurse leaders of research.

5. Digitally enabled nurse-led research

-Facilitate the development of a robust data architecture to underpin research to make the best use of data from digital technologies, inform care delivery and help manage the health of populations.

It funds clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and is responsible for ensuring they commission services for their local population effectively.

National Institute of Health Research (NIHR)- it funds health, public health and social care research to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research.

Health Research Authority (HRA)- it provides a unified national system for the governance of health research. The organization ensures ethical research review, promotes transparency, oversees committees, coordinates regulatory practice, and provides independent recommendations on processing patient information for both research and non-research projects.

NIHR Clinical Research Networks (CRN)- encourages participation in high-quality research, advancing knowledge and improving care through 30 specialty therapy areas and 15 Local Clinical Research Networks. From April 2024, the CRN will transition to a new organisation, the NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN).

NIHR Research Support Service-offers confidential advice for funding applications, including clinical, applied health, and social care research, to all researchers in England and non-NIHR funders. It replaces the NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) and support funding for Clinical Trials Units.

NIHR PPI (Patient and Public Involvement)-NIHR wants patients, carers, members of the public and communities to be involved right across health and care research. NIHR defines public involvement in research as research being carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them.

UK Standards for Public Involvement-offers clear guidelines for effective public engagement, promoting behaviors like flexibility, sharing, learning, and respect. Success is not about meeting all standards, but continuous improvement experienced by all involved. Developed over three years by a UK-wide partnership, the standards are a description of what good public involvement looks like and encourage approaches and behaviours that are the hallmark of good public involvement such as flexibility, sharing and learning and respect for each other.

I had a chance to shadow a group of clinical research practitioner on their clinic day. It was a thorough assessment of their prospective candidates for their intervention. Protocols were strictly followed. One patient took about an hour and another follow up was booked after 3 months. Consent should be taken for every procedure, either verbal or written. The study was explained thoroughly by the team and all questioned were answered. It was an interesting experience as everything should be under their protocol.
