How do my personal values align with the values of the school and my peers? Can you identify any areas where there might be a gap, and if so, how might you bridge that gap?

I think overall, having been in this school since the second grade, the values of the school have impacted my own by a fair amount. For example, the UWC skills and qualities were taught to me from a young age thus I feel that I have learned to value creativity, critical thinking, and self-management. Although I can see the great overlaps between my own values and those of the school, in areas like communication, especially in my work.

Why is it important to understand and reflect on our own values? How can this understanding contribute to leading a fulfilling and rewarding life, both in the IBDP and beyond?

I think that understanding your own values allows you to evaluate what aspects of life are important to you, thus allowing you to focus on things that matter more to you. This can help you set more concise goals and targets to allow you to progress well. I feel like the idea of allowing yourself to set more clear goals can aid you to be able to organize your time well, especially in the IB.

Consider the results of the values questionnaire. Did any of the feedback surprise you or make you think differently about your values? How might you apply this newfound awareness to your academic and personal endeavors?

I do not feel to surprised by the results of the values questionnaire since I feel it was quite predictable. I feel like I am quite aware of my own values so this was not too surprising to me.

Why is understanding and embracing our own identity important? How does our unique identity contribute to the diversity and richness of our community?

Overall I think that understanding your own identity is important on an individual's journey of self-discovery. Understanding that you differ from the people around you can also help you understand how you can work in relation to others, by understanding your similarities and differences in terms of identity. This I feel allows for our communities to develop and for individuals to be exposed to unique people.

In what ways does your identity make you unique? How can you celebrate and leverage your individual strengths and perspectives to contribute positively to your community?

Identity refers to the features of an individual that make that person, themselves. I think in UWC it becomes pretty easy to celebrate your individual strengths as people are valued here regardless of their identity.

Reflect on the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic identity. How do these aspects influence your sense of self and how you relate to the world around you?

I think that, although some people may not let it affect themselves as much, in a community, there are always external factors that may lead an individual to edit the identity that they display to others. I think this can affect the way people see themselves in relation to others or the commmunity.

Mental Heath Lesson One

1. What are three specific risk factors for mental health issues that you identified in the previous lesson, and how can protective factors help mitigate their impact on an individual's mental well-being?
- Social isolation, such as loneliness or lack of social support, can increase the risk of mental health problems. Protective factors like maintaining strong social connections, engaging in social activities, and seeking support from friends and family can mitigate the impact of social isolation.
- Experiencing significant life events like divorce, job loss, or bereavement can lead to mental health issues. Protective factors such as resilience-building strategies, having a support system, and seeking professional help can help individuals cope with these events more effectively.
- Chronic stress can contribute to anxiety and depression and is usually caused by ongoing issues like a demanding job, financial issues, or family problems.

2. Choose one of the top stressors you ranked in the previous lesson. Explain why you believe it could be particularly challenging for someone's mental health, and describe three ways in which protective factors could provide support in this scenario.
The loss of a loved one often brings intense grief and sadness. It's a profound emotional experience that can be overwhelming. The death of a family member can disrupt an individual's daily life in profound ways. It may result in changes in living arrangements, financial stress, and a loss of routine and structure. Maintaining a strong support network is crucial during times of grief. Friends and family can offer emotional support, companionship, and a listening ear. Engaging with a support group for those who have experienced a similar loss can also be beneficial, as it allows individuals to connect with others who understand their pain.

3. Reflect on a time when you or someone you know faced a risk factor for mental health issues. How did you or they employ protective factors to cope with the situation? What could have been done differently to provide even better support?
I think that going into my GCSEs I felt a lot of educational pressure from myself and my family, although I feel that I was able to cope well with these pressures, it still negatively impacted my mental health overall. I think that keeping a social group to help me cope with this stress was a really beneficial thing I did during this time, I think that to support myself better, I could have spent more time outside or in nature to relax myself
