-Chandrasekaran said the increasing production of commodities was driven not by demand but by companies’ desire to lower prices, as well as trade agreements, such as the EU’s proposed deal to import beef from South America.
-Land Matrix, which monitors land deals globally, said in a September report that an increase in land acquisitions starting in 2008 had peaked, but there was potential for a new land rush as economies try to recover from the Covid pandemic, with countries like India and Indonesia opening up their land markets.
-Campaign group Focus on the Global South published a letter signed by 257 organisations last Tuesday rejecting carbon-offsetting pledges from corporations and warning that initiatives such as tree planting will displace indigenous populations while land is still exploited for industrial agriculture.

  • Because of how inexpensive palm oil was, manufacturers found many different uses for it such as replacing chemicals in soaps and cosmetics, and also become a biodiesel feedstock in Asia
  • There are enough oil palm plantations worldwide to cover an area larger than Kansas 
  • The dangerous conditions and abusing labor practices are spreading from Southeast Asia to Africa and Latin America 
  • Because palm plantations require deforestation, about 200 at risk species are threatened, this has received more press
  • Despite this, the IUCN says that shifting away from palm oil could cause more problems (more deforestation, extra exploitation of workers, etc.)
  • There are more sustainable ways to make palm oil, but they will only be implemented if enough consumers care.

      • This makes it cheaper for Indian refiners to import crude palm oil
    • The import tax difference between crude palm oil and refined palm oil would widen to 8.25%
    • This will help refiners, but a difference of 11% is needed to encourage local refining
    • A reduction on edible oils will last until September 30
    • The tax reduction expired on March 31

They set polices to stop deforestation, conversion of other natural ecosystems, human right violations, certified palm oil, being transparent about were its from and how it’s produced.
    - Palm oil is a very efficient crop producing more oil per land the other vegetable oil crop. 40% vegetable oil supply is palm and 6% of the land used is palm.
    - Boycotting would mean other areas would get destroyed for other plants to create oil and smallholder farmers who depend on producing palm oil lose their livelihoods.
    - RSPO palm oil can be very sure that deforestation, conversion of other natural habitats, and exploitation of people  weren’t involved in the creation of.
