Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe. His father abandoned the family early in his life, and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was three. He was then separated by his brother William and his sister Rosalie to be adopted by a rich couple, John and Frances Allan. He adopted the name 'Allan' but decided to make his middle name as he preferred the name 'Poe'. By 13, he was a talented poet, but was discouraged by his father and school headmaster. John Allan wanted Poe to engage in the family business. Poe would often write poems in the back of John's businesses papers.

By the time it was time for Poe to attend college, times were not so good. He and his adoptive father John did not get along. Poe attended the University of Virginia in which he did well in his classes. However, he did not get enough money to cover the cost. Poe decided to get into gambling to cover the costs. Gambling put him into debt. He then left college to join the Army. Two after he joined the U.S. Army, he learned that his adoptive mother Frances Allan was dying of tuberculosis. When he got to Virginia, she had already passed. At that time, he briefly made peace with John who helped him get into the United States Military Academy at West Point. He did well in his studies, but got kicked out a year later because he handled his military duties poorly. John remarried at this time which made Poe cut ties with his father.

After he left West Point, Poe shifted to a full-time writing career. In 1834, John Allan passed away and left Poe out of his will. Poe went into poverty and he started winning writing contests. He started publishing short stories when he then landed an editorial job with Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, Virginia. He was a very heavy critic. He was given the nickname "Tomahawk Man" due to his aggressive critics. In 1837, Poe resigned because of his relationship with the company and alcohol problem. After some years, Poe moved to New York in 1844 and then published one of his most famous books in 1845, "The Raven". At that time, Poe started receiving criticism from a man named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Poe claimed that Longfellow was a plagiarist. However, Poe continued to struggle from poverty even though his writing career was skyrocketing.
