Two after he joined the U.S. Army, he learned that his adoptive mother Frances Allan was dying of tuberculosis. When he got to Virginia, she had already passed. At that time, he briefly made peace with John who helped him get into the United States Military Academy at West Point. He did well in his studies, but got kicked out a year later because he handled his military duties poorly. At that time, Poe started receiving criticism from a man named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Poe claimed that Longfellow was a plagiarist.
