Specific example of a gender issue in football.

A specific sporting example of a gender issue in football is the wage of the players. Women in the super league who are at a lower part of the spectrum get around £5000-£10,000 a year and those at the top get around £35,000 this means that it is hard for women to make a career out of football. This may seem like a lot of money to some however top male players such as Wayne Rooney get on average around £300,000 a week which is 10x more than what a female player will earn in a year.

What is sexism?

Sexism is prejudice, stereotyping or discriminating against women on the basis of their sex. Gender refers to the relationships between men and women and the conceptions of both masculinity and femininity. Gender has been evident in football as women's football isn't a popular as men's which means there aren't as many women's teams. Women's football is also rarely broadcasted on TV which means female players don't get equal opportunities to men.

Effects of gender issues in my sport and their impacts

There are many negative affects that sexism has on football and women.

One effect of this is that it may put younger performers off of participating in football as it isn't as popular as men's football which means it isn't as recognised as much making it harder for women to make it to elite level due to the lack of teams. Even if these players were good enough to become elite performers it may cause them to drop out at an early stage due to the small income meaning players will have to have another job alongside playing football which can be tiring and time consuming.

Another negative effect of this is that if less women participate in football at elite level it can cause women's football to decrease as a whole. This means that there will be less role models for younger females to look up to which will also cause more of a decrease in participation and in worst cases cause women's football to die out.

Women's football is broadcasted on TV a lot less than men's and only the very top games are put on TV as they attract very little viewers. This is because many viewers feel like women's football isn't as aggressive and less entertaining to watch. This then means that women's teams don't get many sponsors which also decreases their profits for new facilities/coaches which will also decrease their development. If women were broadcasted more on TV and women's sports were promoted more often it may attract a larger fan base which means clubs will have the ability to gain more profits. It will also allow female players to make a better career out of it as their income will increase.
