Lt.Cdr.Jordan Menfrow Infranty of the 35th squadron.
When we heard about assassination of Arch duke Ferdinand by some Serbian nationalist that wanted more rights and thought he was coming to more stricter rules.Plus, tensions were already high in Europe, causing the assassination to light the fuse to start world war1.Me and my squad where shipped out immediately for the war to come.We thought was gonna be quick shoot and celebrate situation, but we were wrong......dead wrong. When arrived at the battlefield “The Marne” was ridden with craters from bombs and artillery. There some bodies strewn across landscape some dying, some already dead,it was like a graveyard for the living. Our forces have been able to dig zig zag or straight trenches to provide cover and protection from incoming arms and artillery. We couldn’t even gain ground more than 3 feet.It was like a no man’s land filled with wreckage, caresses, and mud, lots of mud.Luckily my squadron have only suffered some casualties and wounded including “Led John”, “Nades, and “Ace”.All good men, probably only some might make it to the end of this battle...if there is a end to this madness.

Lt.Cdr.Jordan Menfrow 35th squadron log2
Ever since Ace died due to a shrapnel in his back,Nades has kept to himself lately,Ace was like a brother to Nades.Cpt. Morrow is thinking about putting him on leave take care of other men and recuperate or have a honorable discharge. We hard the news that we won the first and second battle of Marne and we were moving up to the Argonne Forest, but we heard the news that John “Black Jack” has been given overall command and is conserving resources.Even though Black jack was on the other side of the front,we still respected him and his valor. We received orders that we were being stationed to a Mk2 landship named “Big Nessy” fresh off the assembly block. We all had tank training ,but you had to prepare to be incinerated if the tank blows. We are all shuddered at the thought. We also got it fueled, cranked, and given a pigeon.
A few hours later we were at the border of the Argonne Forest and to make it worse..fog lots of fog.It was like a big white blanket of blindness and I sure hoped to God we would make through. We heard shooting about few yards in then we heard it....the sound of AT guns. Our ears were rining before we realized our tracks have been obliterated to kingdom cum.I ordered everyone out and to send a out pegion for help.We are ran as fast as we could to a dug trench and closed are ears.We heard the sound of ammunition exploding and and a big thud.Big Nessy was gone.We checked ourselves,I had some shell shock up nothing serious,Led John is fine, Nades I forgot wasn’t here, and two of are replacements Bernard, Alex were dazed, but they were fine.I promised myself never to go in a tank ever again,no money could get me in one,not even in war.

Terrified. That was feeling me and my squad were experiencing while we stared at the wreckage of Big Nessy, well what was left of Big Nessy.Jordan!,one of my squad said.I turned around and started thinking about our situation.First,Bernard and Alex were trying not to cry that they just almost died,Led John went out scrounging supplies while dodging jerries around Big Nessy.I was looking through our supplies and saw we had 4 Webley revolvers with 6 bullets in each with 20 reserve for each.I started checking our food stocks,we had 20 lasguana M.R.E and 20 canteens of water which were very breakable, and some portable small plates and forks. When Led John came back he had some ammo for the Webleys’,some more water, and some berries and herbs. After we had all supplies gathered we started to try our best to navigate to allied forces without getting caught or worse...killed

Despair.Despair is what we felt that when we figured out we went opposite direction of allied forces, even closer to jerries position. We had just ran out of rations and we had 9 canteens lefts. Our feet were sore and blistered from hiking and hiding from Germans patrolling roads and trenches prepared to shoot.Led John and I were thinking we could surrender becuase we all speak fluent German and John can do sign language.Bernard and Alex were too depressed to argue,so all four of us unloaded our Webly’s into a bag,put them and our guns in fire so the Germans woundn’t learn or use them against our brothers. We started walking to a German bunker yelling in German “We surrender,we have no weapons and there are only 4 of us”we said.”Get on your knees or you WILL be shot”the young German said.We got on our knees with some pain due to our sore feet. They searched us,tied, hooded us,and put us on a truck with a putrid smell of old hay and rotten food.We were quiet whole ride and took naps on a cleared out part at the front of the truck where Led John was sleeping. We had to keep our feet up to reduce the soreness and swelling in them.We weren’t sure, but we think we were in there for about 3 days when we finally reached a combination of buildings with inticing country side in background was the British officer camp,Holzminden. We’ve only heard about this “Black hole of Germany” where no escape attempts were succesful. All of were already thinking to prove that record wrong.

Lt.Cdr. Jordan Menfrow of 35th squadron, well what’s left of it.Ever since we arrived at Holzminden, the camp commander Karl Niemeyer,a man full of hate and cruelty, not even enough for us to have mercy or sympathy, not a bit. When me and led Jack went higher rank quarters for lt.Cdr.s and higher on the opposite side of compound and while Alex and Bernard headed to lower rank quarters for lieutenants and lower. The only time were able to talk and plan at lunch room that can it only hold about 100 men and during courtyard where we can plant, play makeshift tennis, and other things.Above all,the treatment here was horrendous, but we were grateful we weren’t stuck in a coal or salt mine and there are some captains here that are well respected around here.Me and Jack were going to the other captains and commanders to see if they have any plans or need help to “borrow or “loan” supplies from the jerries with my and Jack’s impeccable German and convincing skills.Let’s just hope that we might be able to escape just not for are sakes but for everyone else in this accursed camp.

Lt.Cdr. Jordan Menfrow of Holzminden POW camp.
Brilliant! The plan to get out of this place amazing!Sadly,Bernard and Alex have sadly been relocated to a different camp and John is going tomorrow.I just hope John will make it out of this war alive.I met these two men David Gray an RAF pilot that was shot down escorting bombers and a respected among the whole camp and Cecil Blain a RAF pilot shot down over enemy line and ended up here after a few camps.I asked them if they had any plans to escape or helping other people escape. They were hesitant at first and asked me some question about how my squad and how I got here, they were intrigued about my German,Gray could also speak German fluently. They decided to share some of their plans due to caution of a chance of me being German spy and I respected their caution and gladly appreciated their trust. They said they have been preparing for 7 months for this escape,I didn’t where, but they told me it’s near the orderlies quarters where disguise themselves as workers to”work” in the lower part of the orderlies quarters.Thye have also been making fake IDs,papers, tickets, uniforms, and civilian clothes to the long trek to Holland,an neutral country. Also, they’re thinking about acting as 2 doctors escorting an escape sycho from insane asylum.I think their deciding that I could be a good sycho,oh boy I hope that this plan works.

Zero Hour

Lt.Cdr. Jordan Wenfrow about to be free Holzminden Pow camp,hopefully.5 hours until “Zero Hour” when we go through over 100 yard tunnel in the dark, dirt crumbling, rodents, and inspects..all factors that we have to deal with..we will do anything to escape...anything.I have perfected my sycho skills and packed my kit with everything I need..hopefully.Blain and gray were one of the first tunnel,so they’ll first, then several others will go and I’ll be about the tenth one out,so I can join up with Blain and Gray.Just in case people try to escape while we were escaping the tunnel, all fellow POWs will be informed there’ll be a escape around 12:00,some were only told not to try anything until tomorrow. All around Holzminden there some type of atmosphere anxiety and nervous feeling all around.Gray and Blain were confident that this will go flawlessly, but I still had some doubts about this not succeeding, but there was a small feeling I was experiencing, for chance to be free was more motivational than a soldier can get.At about 11:50 a young looking RAF woke me up to get ready to get to the orderlies quarters to start what would be the greatest break out of 20th century in the making.I gathered all my poessions and headed out to the tunnel just as about 100 plus men headed there at the same time.I got to the tunnel a bit early so I could what the fine tunnel looked like and I was amazed. There I saw a makeshift air system,a tunnel stretching abut 100 yards, rubble and discarded wood, and a lamps stanching all the way to the end of intimating tunnel. When I got there,Blain and Gray have already gone including the other 9 ,so I was next to go up.I took a few breaths and stated crawling to freedom.Midway through tunnel more people came to get out,but the tunnel was sorta un stable due to the other soldiers hitting their head, legs, and arms all around walls and roof.I was partially to end when I heard a big “SWACK”,the part of the tunnel collapsed on a guy.In a instant I was digging him out as fast as I could, but people on the otherside got him before I did.I continued on,went out of tunnel and silently dashed to the woods to meet up with Gray and Blain to make the trek to Holland.Few hours later we made it to a field of corn and rested and ate until nightime. We did that every day until we made it to the town that I would play as a sycho.I got changed into shaggy clothes(What were left of my POW jump suit) and started being led by Gray and Blain. At the town I started a fit by struggling ,but then Gray “sedated” me with some aspirin nmedicine and we continued.A few days later we made it to the border and observed the guards routines thenwhile they were turned around we made a dash for the fence and started climbing the fence. Then a guard noticed us but he was to late,we made it cross the border into Netherlands, headed to Holland. We cried tears of joy and sadness remembering all the friends and soldiers we lost.I just wish my squad was with me.A few weeks later we flounder about 7 other people escaped and the majority of escapees got recaptured and brought back to Holzminden.I never saw Alex or Bernard again but led Jack escaped from a POW camp in open where stood in a blind spot and cut throughthe fences and started his run to the Netherlands. We met up at a pub back in Britain ,shared stories, accomplishments, and sadness when heard Alex and Bernard were killed in failed escape attempt somewhere within Germany.Right there in that pub,I decided to leave the war,no matter I will never come back to war. This is the end of my story but there are still plenty of unsung heroes of war...way more.
