My recollection involves my fifth grade teacher, Mr. Attig. Every student wanted Mr. Attig as a teacher for fifth grade--he was the only male teacher in that grade level! So, as the year started, I wanted to follow all the rules and be the best student I could be!
One day, he asked me to help carry a tall pile of file folders that were filled with essential documents. He suggested I walk slowly because they were in alphabetized order. Low and behold, I dropped them all over the floor! I melted into the tile and almost started to cry! What happened next taught me the value of being human and extending grace to others and their mistakes.
He immediately stooped to help me retrieve the folders and helped ease my embarrassment by saying he tends to drop things, too! He even started to tell me about a recent experience in his own kitchen. Obviously, he knew I was feeling like a failure!
I learned that helping others to put their mistakes into perspective is all part of life and a practice needing polished over and over!

When I was in high school, my Calculus teacher was on a state education committee and had to miss school semi-regularly for meetings. He asked a few of his students to teach his other classes when he was absent, roughly once a month or so. They also had a substitute so there would be an adult in the room, but he placed the actual teaching responsibilities in the hand of his student helpers. I was asked to teach one of the Pre-Calculus or Algebra classes that fell during my study hall period. It was so intimidating! I have come a long way since then, but I was so quiet and shy at the time, and it was hard for me to speak in front of so many people! But Mr. Dorsett trusted me with his class, and it gave me a lot of confidence to be in front of a group. I also learned that it was one thing to solve math problems by myself but a whole other thing to explain them to others. This experience and opportunity helped me begin to develop ways to communicate with students, even if I didn't fully realize it at the time, and I'm grateful to Mr. Dorsett for the lessons along the way!

My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Wobbekind, was my most memorable teacher for many reasons. Most years, I had to work very hard in school to be successful and therefore did not always enjoy school. My parents could never understand why I could remember song lyrics or peoples phone numbers but could never remember anything from school. My fourth grade year was different though. Mrs. Wobbekind made learning exciting and had a song or chant to help us remember the content, which proved to be very beneficial for me. Her teaching style and overall presence left a huge impact on me. She helped improve my confidence that year as well as my view on school. Mrs. Wobbekind made such an impact on me that it led me to want to become a teacher myself so that I could help students develop a love for learning despite whatever struggles they may have.
