This picture represents me in many ways. In this picture, I am at a small concert with my whole family. My family is an important part of me and has shaped me in many ways. We've been through a lot together and we've always made it through. We don't have much contact with all our family members, but we always know that we can always count on each other. That has shaped me in all my relationships because with all my friends, I always try to help them in whatever I can and be there in all their moments. Here we are at a music concert. Music is one of the most important things in my life, and the thing that defines me the most. I love sharing music with my loved ones because every song conveys a lot of feelings and sounds. I love listening and analyzing all kinds of songs and one day I want to become a producer. I love going to live concerts and analyzing every instrument. From an early age I was very curious about instruments and the sounds they make. I started with flute like everyone else, but the next year I took drum lessons (I fell in love with the instrument), the year after that I played violin for 3 years, in middle school I played guitar for 3 years and when I got to high school I discovered the bass, which is my favorite instrument out of all the instruments I've played.

My name is Laila Oaxaca Larralde. Laila has an Arabic origin and means "nocturne beuty" or "night". When my parents were thinking about my name, they read books about names. My father really liked the name Ilana, but my mother wasn't convinced. They found Laila and my mother loved the name and the meaning. They agreed that my father would choose the name if they had another child.

I always loved my name because it wasn't very common and I never had to sit in a classroom with another Laila, which made me feel different in a good way. Since I was little, I've had a lot of nicknames for friends and family. My whole family called me Lais from a young age and it's a nickname that only they use. My friends called me many different names like Laili, Lila, Lol, Oaxaqueña or Lai. I like them all, but when I introduce myself or someone asks me what I want to be called by new people, I prefer Lai.

I like how it sounds and it's the one I identify with the most because I always tell my friends that it feels “softer" and almost everyone just calls me Laila, but the change to Lai sounds lighter and easier in a way, I like that.

I only have one name and I've never felt like it didn't suit me, I've always felt comfortable with it and always connected with it in a way. I think it suits my personality in many ways. How so? I don't really know how to explain it, but it feels like it's right up my alley and it represents a lot of me in a way. I've heard that a lot of people associate names with certain personalities. An example of this is the name Diego, which many people associate with a red flag. With my name, I feel like every person who meets me can relate my personality to my name, and I like that. But it's something very personal, because there are other Laila´s in the world who are very different from me and who associate a lot with their name, so it's more personal.

Framing Meaning and Stereotypes

Throughout my life I have heard many comments about tattoos and that all people who have tattoos have been in prison or are just bad people.

This stereotype confused me a lot when I was little because close friends of my family, teachers or some family members had tattoos and didn't seem like bad people or ex-cons and after get to know them, I confirmed that they were good people. As I grew up, I realized that this stereotype didn't make sense and it was really wrong to criticize people because of a tattoo or any other physical feature.

Three weeks ago, I got my first tattoo. My parents were shocked because they grew up with the same views in their family. But after many conversations, they understood that it's not a big deal and that I won't become a bad person and go to jail because of a tattoo. Now that I have a tattoo, I no longer perceive myself as different or as someone who has the traits that everyone thinks that stereotype is.

Dany's Guitar Solo (Live from Auditorio Nacional, CDMX) - The Warning.

This is a guitar solo by guitarist Daniela Villareal from the band The Warning, a Mexican band.

This was a special song that they presented at their first performance at the Auditorio Nacional and included many riffs from some of their most important songs since their beginnings.

I chose this song because although it has no lyrics, the guitar melody can really convey a lot of emotions and stories. I think that guitar solo describes a lot of different states. Like my life, where there were very quiet moments or loud moments, very fast moments and slow moments, complex moments and simple moments, but all together they make a special story and I can find it in this solo in a certain way, because it's the story of the band and their songs.

I have not participated in an exchange, but I once traveled to Madrid. Something that really surprised me was the orderliness people have in specific places. I think the most common example, and the one we discussed in class, was how people stand on one side of the escalator to make space for those in a hurry to pass. Another thing is that people there respect your personal space, they are not very touchy. That is not so normal or common for me in Mexico. We are always in each other's personal space, and we are not very orderly.

The presidency of Vicente Fox marked a significant period in Mexico's history in several ways. Notably, his election ended 70 years of PRI rule, brought greater economic stability, and improved relations with the United States. These changes led to a stronger democracy in Mexico, increased freedom of expression, and greater community participation.

Multiculturalism: ideal or threat?

How do you feel about multiculturalism?

Multiculturalism, for me, means always being open minded and continually learning more about other cultures to develop a deeper level of respect and tolerance. I believe this is very important, but it is also very difficult for many people because of their stereotypes and ways of thinking.

Do you believe there will come a time when multicultural societies become the norm? or is multiculturalism an unachievable ideal?

I think it is possible, but not in the near future. Unfortunately, many new generations are still receiving an education that instills incorrect stereotypes. It is true that as time passes, more and more people are raising their voices and defending the rights of everyone. Thanks to those who keep fighting, there is hope for multicultural societies.

If I could create a toy, I think I would make some instruments, but instruments that you need to build and design yourself. These would be small instruments that are easy to assemble, similar to Lego. For example, a guitar would come with all the parts separated, but once you put it together, it functions like a real instrument. The instruments would have a simple design so kids can decorate them as they wish. The set would include paints, glitter, stickers, markers, and more.

With this toy, I would encourage kids to create, not just follow instructions, and to build their own world without limits. I think that nowadays, many toys are too easy and do not encourage much imagination in children.
