Connor T. They are in a place with a yard "wide enough to hold a hundred people dancing atilogu.", and "walls, topped by coiled electric wires."(pg 9 Adichie). This shows that this girl is in a massive heavily fortified compound that gives clues that her father is not just a regular pastor, but a bribed puppet for the government.

The Achike home is very tense. There is a very obvious and powerful power dynamic here. Kambili's father Papa Eugene is very controlling to everyone in his family, he is even abusive. Kambili's Mama is controlled by her husband and obeys him. While her brother Jaja fights against is fathers control no matter what the consequences might be. For example when Jaja refuses to go to communion her goes against his father resulting in a quarrel. Papa holds the power over everyone in the household.

I would describe the dynamic between the Achike family members as complex and strained, as well as very patriarchal. I also think that the two different colors of hibiscus flowers in the front yard might represent the differences between Mama and Kambili. I think this is shown as Mama managing to come back and act like everything is normal and unproblematic relatively quickly after being harmed or held back, like how the red hibiscus plants "seemed to bloom so fast...considering how often...visitors plucked them as they walked past to their parked cars" (Adichie 9). Whereas Kambili takes a longer time to process and think over what's going on around her after it happens , similar to how the purple hibiscus plants take longer to bloom.

Harry L.D.S.,

The family dynamic in the Achike household in the novel Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is strained. After Jaja tells Papa Eugene that he doesn't want to have communion anymore, and Papa tells him: "It is death", Jaja says he "will die, Papa" (Adichie 6,7). Papa is very angry at Papa and throws a missal at Jaja, but "It [misses] Jaja completely,... [and] it hit the glass etagere", and that etagere holds ballerina figures that Mama valued (Adichie 7). The stain in the Achike household is shown to be very extreme when Mama and Jaja "were... acting so normal... as if they did not know what had happened..." to show that Mama and Jaja were afraid that Papa would hurt Mama or Jaja if they acted against him (Adichie 8). The family dynamic in the Achike household is strained, and focused on a fear of Papa.

Evie Saacks

Kambili lives in a very controlling and religious household. She goes to church where her father is respected and important to the community. Her family is taught to maintain an image to glorify her father. We can see the difference between her church life and her home life when her father becomes aggressive in private. When her father becomes upset with her brother, she observes, "when Papa did not see Jaja go to the altar that Palm Sunday when everything changed, he banged his leatherbound missal, with the red and green ribbons peaking out, down on the dining table when we got home" (6). This shows how she sees her family dynamic switch in private, when her fathers controlling side comes out and he becomes abusive. If someone in her household decides not to obey her father or to make him upset, he becomes violent.

Everyone acted like everything is normal and polished the figurines which seems like they do every time something like this happens. so, they don't really interact with each other and like I said before it's almost like they tip toe around each other.

They had a "spacious dining room" that transitioned to a "wider living room" but even then she felt suffocated and trapped within it.

Cynya Lewis -

I would describe the family dynamics in the Achike household as very orderly and structured. The family seems to play into gender norms meaning the man of the house takes control financially and while the woman falls back and does the nurturing part of parenthood. This idea is even more enhanced being that the character Papa Eugene is an admirable priest at church but, in his home he is sometimes feared and is aggressive. The energy he brings into the household creates tension and makes his family feel trapped. Kambili explains,"Although our spacious dining room gave way to an even wider living room, I felt suffocated"(Coetzee 7).

The dynamics in the Achike household are very tense and controlling. Papa Eugene is a person who wants to seem like a good, hard-working citizen who contributes to the community and "...[speaks] out for freedom." (Adichie 5). In reality, he is a very controlling and abusive person that his family fears. For example, when Jaja skipped communion, Papa Eugene got very angry and threw a missal across the room, breaking Mama's figurines. Another example is when Kambili says, "The last time, only two weeks ago, when her swollen eye was still the black-purple color of an overripe avocado, she had rearranged them after she polished them." (Adichie 11) This shows how the father is abusive, exposing not only the mother to harm, but also leaving Kambili shocked, fearful, and uncomfortable. Overall, the family dynamic is very tense, controlling, abusive, and leaves the characters uncomfortable.

According to her, in public, he's an outstanding individual, but behind closed doors, Papa is very aggressive. It seems like he has a history of violent behavior towards his family.

Lorrin D

In the novel Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie I would describe the family dynamics in the Achike household as hostile. Papa Eugene is written as a man with two personalities both personalities directing contrading each other. The priest of the church he's apart of tends to praise him for "Making the biggest donations"(Adichie 5) or "Paying for the cartons of communion wine" (Adichie 5). Although he was described as a devoted contributor to the church at home he is abusive and hostile seeking the power dynamic of their family. When Papa's son Jaja doesn't receive communion he "Picked up the missal and flung it across the room"(Adichie 7).

I would describe the Achike households dynamics as very complimentary. For example, Papa's dynamic in the family is confrontive and aggressive. Papa noticed that Jaja, his son did not go to the church's communion and confronts him, "Jaja, you did not go to communion,"(Adichie 6). Jaja explains how the wafer he eats gives him bad breath and will gladly die because he wont eat it.This angered papa and "[He] looked around the room quickly...he picked up the missal and flung it across the room, toward jaja" ( Adichie 7). For Papa's aggression Mama's calmness combats it. Jaja gives rebellion to the family. And Kambili and Sisi are the quiet observers.

For example, Papa is praised and upheld at church, but at home is abusive and forceful. At the church he's described as reflecting "triumphant entry" (Adichie 5) Mama is quiet and contained, abused by Papa but still trying to uphold a calm demeanor. Kambili mentions mamas eye was once "swollen" and a "black-purple color" (Adichie 11). Jaja is a bit more of the opposite and shows more resilience to Papa. Jaja is also seemingly mistreated by Papa and therefore understands his mother. Kambili is also isolated. Although not mentioned to be abused yet, still isolated and feeling unsafe.

This quote shows how faith affects this society's social and psychological understanding of eachother.

I would describe the setting to be very tense. The father, Papa, is abusive and controlled the entire family with his religious aspects. Everybody in this house seems to be silent about this, not mentioning and kind of ignoring everything Papa has done. On page 7, Kambili thinks to herself "I feel suffocated", which shows how she truly feels in this household.

Xena Paxtor

I would describe the family dynamics in the Achike household as having Papa as the head of the family. I think that Papa holds all of the power. In the book I see that the members of the Achike family seek Papa's approval and attention. I can also see that the mother is very submissive to her husband. She's quiet and takes abuse from her husband. Mama's face was a "black-purple color of an overripe avocado." She's soft and takes care of her children even when she's injured.

Other then the intense atmosphere that I have mentioned before, the setting seems nice and pleasant outside. There are flowers, and Kambili seems to like her room. She can smell food being cooked, and enjoys when her mother does her hair. To me, the atmosphere felt more warm when she described this. "She would sit on an armchair near the kitchen door and I on the floor with my head cradled between her thighs." (10)

I would describe the setting as tense and suffocating. As the story goes on I notice that Papa is very passionate about his religion which leads to him being very immovable when Jaja decides not to go to communion. When Papa finds out that Jaja didn't go, the whole mood of that section is very tense and overwhelming. Kambili even tried to express discomfort to Jaja while the whole interaction was being had Between them. "He knew I was looking at him, that my shocked eyes begged him to seal his mouth, but he did not look at me." (6). This reveals the severity of the situation, Also where Kambili indicates that she didn't want the moment to escalate further.

In the Achike household I would describe the family dynamics to be described as, by Kambili "suffocating". When Papa throws the missile at Jaja Kambili expresses discomfort in the silence and intensity in the environment she's in. " The silence was broken only by the whir of the ceiling fan as it sliced through the still air." (7) This shows the tense and wrenching feeling she feels in the environment she's in.

I would describe the family dynamics in the Achike household to be extremely tense and controlled. So far in this story, you can tell the limit of freedom the children Kambili and Jaja have. Also, when Kambili says, "I meant to say I am sorry Papa broke your figurines, but the words that came out were, 'I'm sorry your figurines broke, Mama'" (10), it shows how quiet this family is about their issues. They won't mention a thing about Papa and how he treats them, which brings much more tension to their household.
