Sinatra stressed the importance of the power of vocal craft as well as honest expression. He pushed back against the stereotype of pop singers are vessels for produces and are only valued for their "ability to perform tricks and project attitudes" which were often fake. He believed in lyrics he sung. They were true to him and his story.

Later Sinatra was accused of raising to stardom through ties with the mob. These unconfirmed claims did not affect his popularity, for he was bringing in new fans at an extremely fast rate. This was a new idea, for everyone was looking toward the future for the next trend while Sinatra was looking to the past. Though he did acknowledge great composers and lyricists of the past, not everything he did was in respect to the past. He also promoted new creative talents by singing their songs. He also supported civil rights movement by promoting African-American musicians. He became the trend setter for rock 'n' roll. This spawned from his "sexual energy and knowing and sheer charisma" that predated The Beatles and Elvis. He became so popular his support for presidential candidates led to elections of those who he supported, both Kennedy and later Reagan.
