I think that the video was really representative. Creating a sense of belonging and acceptance of refugees is a crucial matter. Native students should have the chance of learning about other cultures and ways of life so that they could feel more positive towards newcomers.

I'd like to create a project simple, but effective. At the moment, I'd chose a practical project, such as a cooking workshop to know different traditions, or something similar... At the moment, in my country and in my region talking about variety and integration could be misconstrued due to political reasons. Migration has become, unfortunately, a politically charged issue in Italy. So I'd prefer a more pragmatic approach

This is a very interesting project which reaches out into the community. In my school there is something similar called "Area a rischio" for kids who are risking dropping out of school. They are encouraged to engage with the community and learn reciprocal respect. Although this is for Italian students, it would work very well with migrant children as well.

I liked the video a lot and Jana seems really passionate about their projects. In our etwinning project this year with the title
"Stars don't shine only at night" we are trying to find the light in our actions, deeds, behaviour and act humanely. We are lucky because two Special Εducation colleagues are running a project on people with disabilities and how the pupils feel about them. We are also ready to welcome a group of refugees and although the task is a challenge, it's a great opportunity for community-based projects.

As I teach in a secondary high school, I think that our long and old programs should have to be changed and reduced in a very strong way so teachers could have more time to prepare a project with small groups of students (not with our classes full of 30 students). In my country it is very difficult to abolish very old topics even if our politicians say they are doing it, we are having the same problems at the beginning of every school year.

The RESPACT project presented by Jana is very interesting and not easy to carry out in some school settings still tied to the old school curricula. I think RespAct is really great: it is a pedagogical project which emphasizes democratic and sports-related learning. It empowers children to actively shape their surroundings and protect themselves against violence. A similar project in my own community could be adopted with the support of the teachers working at the Liceo Sportivo. They could organize several championships (soccer, basket, volley, swimming) in order to involve above all the “marginalized” students, not only newly arrived migrants, but each disadvantaged or troublesome student.

This project is very well done because when we use sports and videos Italian students not only migrants or refugees are surely interested in. I teach in a technical school where many students are boys so frequently football matches are organised and they involve students and teachers too. Well, this is definitely food for thought and hard work as I have no experience in dealing with newly arrived migrants neither in a personal level nor professional.

In any case, sports and drama or arts, including music, are probably the best ways to integrate newcomers once they will find their own way to communicate or express themselves through what they are good at. That’s a fantastic way to be praised for what you CAN do, rather than being left aside for what you can’t do.

As for the project presented, it’s very well organised and structured.

I have heard and also read that here in Greece especially in small villages which are located near the migrants' camps the members of local community in cooperation with NGO and churches' staff have developed different kind of projects in order to make migrant children and teenagers feel active again and start to live a normal life.

RespAct is a good example of a community development project. My school is located in a not-so-rich suburb of Athens, but local authorities support schools in anyway possible. I believe we could adopt the RespAct ideas. The parents council in our school also helps in organising various events for children and parents. This could easily open up to the neighbourhood.

In my school organized a procetto on football and on film forums and articles of crocheting manuals, which also involved migrant pupils, to reduce early school leaving.
RespAct I find this very interesting because it involves pupils outside of school considers their neighborhoods and makes them protagonists of the project. It 's really a good initiative.

one thing i guess children would love would be letting each of them teach the others something they are good at: for example if one child can play the piano, he or she could invite the other children to a small representation followed by a quick introduction lesson in the area of music.

At my college we work in a similar way, more or less. Beside other exams, the projects usually last 8 weeks. Students gain in cooperative learning and they expand their network (with businessess). We have no experience yet with immigrants, but I can't see no reason why this shouldn't work. Well, apart from the language issue but 20-year-olds usually find their way with Google translate :).

Jana's video is very interesting and full of valid suggestions and strategies for a proficient migrant students' learning. I think these projects based on the respect of the different backgrounds of students have already been adopted in my school. As matter of fact, I and my colleagues, often focus on topics as Sports, Gender equality, favourite hobbies in our lessons or projects. Sometimes my school participates to different tournament: Photography, Drawings, Paintings, Ability games in which our students can meet and share their hobbies even they don't speak the same language. This is an important step for the mutual knowledge and for improving the empathy not only among the migrants but also for those students who are borderline.

In my school it is quite common to develop projects that promote tolerance and respect for difference, that is, a culture of peace. These projects, which I am referring to, are not designed specifically because of newly arrived migrants, but because of any student regarding the healthy socialization that must exist in all schools. For me, is all about teaching respect, acceptance and appreciation of the richness and diversity of the cultures of our world, of our modes of expression and of our ways of expressing our qualities as human beings. It is a question of teaching how to find harmony in difference. It is a matter of teaching our students that respect for difference and tolerance are virtues that make peace possible and contribute to replace a culture of war with a culture of peace.
In this school year we integrate a portuguese network of solidary schools.

As I wrote before, the refugee children who reside in the camps haven't started yet going to school in my responsibility area (Camp of Nea Kavala, Northern Greece). On the other hand the local greek community has some concerns about the schooling of the refugee children. Concerns that in some cases turn to be racistic manifestations against the refugees. The greek Ministry of Education organises Information meetings with the Parent Associations, calling specialists like doctors who talk about public health issues, lawyers who talk about the rights of children on education and others. There is still a minority of the greek parents who really do not want the refugee children in greek schools, even in the afternoon and they threaten that if the refugee chlidren will come to school, they will keep their children at home. The common "arguements" are the possible diseases that the refugee children could carry at school, that they are not vaccinated (sic) and that they could be offensive against the greek children, or they would demand removal of christian symbols.
These manifastations are organized by right radical parties and groups.
Because of the above, this idea of developping projects with the community could probably contribute on eliminating the hesitations of the greek society about the schooling of the refugee children.
But I believe that this can be implemented only step by step. The RespAct project can give us a lot of ideas that the teachers will use at place, when the time comes.
In education we beleieve that we use first what we have common if we want to promote the principles of equality. In this case i think that a good tool could be the common points of the arabic and greek culture: Vocabulary, food, tales and proverbs.

Another ideas are radio broadcast or a cooking workshops, which can be open, friendly experiences resulting in a great sense of community. The workshops can brought students closer together, helped to clear up prejudices and made it possible to see what the school in particular needs to make its integration strategy a success.

Well, that's a really interesting project to implement. However, in my area there are no newly arrived immigrants. There are the hot-spot settlements but the immigrants haven't "moved" yet. If they come and sent to our school, it's certain we will organize sth similar. This project is really food for thought. So, I can tell you only what we are now doing in our school with the immigrant students we have. This year I am the founder of an E-twinning project entitled "Different. Still the Same". The greek working group consists of greek students as well as of students from India. All the activities have the same goal: prove that we may be different (in religion, habits, way of life) but we are still the same when we grief, when we are happy. Another project in the frames of a curriculum course will deal with our multicultural school: students of different countries will present their different traditions, beliefs etc. This project will start in February. Moreover, we are about to prepare a KA2 Erasmus+ project on a similar topic. So, we are doing our best. In case we have newly-arrived immigrants, we will try sth more organized with the local community. Thanks anyway for the ideas

Jana’s RespAct project is really interesting. I’ve experienced a similar project with disabiled students. I’m a teacher for special needs students in a middle secondary school in Italy. A few years ago I had the opportunity to work for three years in a school with many problems, located in a suburb area of a big city. The local community gave us the opportunity to organize some laboratory projects based on art, gardening, and sport. Students enjoyed them a lot. The activities involved both normal and disabled students. At the moment I’m teaching in another area, which is better. Anyway the local administration doesn’t help us: no projects, no laboratories.

In my school we have before tried to develop a community-based project. It was not accepted by our headmaster and it was rejected but this is not the important thing. It was thought not for migrant students but for students with behaviour disorders or with social problems, students in risk of staying out of the system. Well, personally I had no newlly arrived migrants in my school neither this year nor the previous ones. I find the ideas and the actions of RespAct project very interesting but quite difficult to be applied, as they require collaborative work of a significant number of teachers and some kind of support from the local community or authorities. Anyway, I think that in case we have newlly arrived migrant students at our school, team activities like the sports and the games presented in this project could play an important role in their integration.

Community-based projects can be distinguished as a key to the successful integration of newly arrived students. Only with a help of common activities children can start theit cooperation. But what is also of a great importance that such activities must bring the feeling of safety at the new place. It was mentioned in the video that the project is divided into 3 parts, each of which helps to overcome a certain difficulty. Each stage makes a newly arrived student more confident.That`s why such kinds of projects must be introduced.

Community based projects have multiple benefits, as people get to meet the migrants in person. Thus they are no longer numbers or news items. Ideally, such projects would include the parents as well, when possible. What I would do, keeping in mind the community in which I last worked as a class teacher is that I would try and create a project with the home for the elderly. They could make cookies together, the elderly could share stories and traditional games, and the children could do the same. Such an activity would instil an sense of respect for diversity, which is not only based on cultures but age as well,

These projects are an excellent way of working together despite language or cultural boundaries. In my neighbourhood, we could organise an athletic day at the local sports centre with other schools in the neighbourhood. We
could also seek for permission from local authorities to paint the school's or the sports centre's wall. Parents could also participate. The difficult part, when dealing with children, is to get parental permission for video taping.

I don't think it is possible to realize these kind of projects in Italian schools. Integration activities are limited to helping students with languare and school subjects. I think that only local no profit associations can realize these kind of projects.

This school year our school project is about eating and living healthy. It would be interesting to organize a "Pedagogical Day" for our students where they could make some kind of workshops with professionals from our community regarding some information about our farmers work, where to find their fresh food products or where can we go for a fun walk, with fun activities, etc. There is a world out there, that is part of our community life, to be explored with our students...

In my school, we don't work with migrants but with Roma children. Altough, thw above ideas can also be useful to our work. For example, this year we run a project of teeth hygience. So, we can organize meetings with dentists or bring toothbrushes at schools and tape a video of we brush properly our teeth.

In Greece people count on private initiative for solutions so is the situation with migrants. In my school there is a group of volunteer women who cater for the feeding needs of the migrants and also for the destitute students. The City council also offers free lessons to students with difficulties in language and school subjects. However such a project as the one on the video would be very useful because it would bring the migrants and not only them closer to the community take away their anger for the foreign community and open the road for integration.

I think the body awareness, cooperation, listening, are important to create firt of all, a team spirit among children, only through play. I think it would be interesting to do a project on respect and listening.

If a teacher manages to get his/her students to cooperate outside class or school , it's really huge deal. I really managed to do that once. The past year or so, here in Greece there is a big refugee problem, as you probably already know. We (students and teachers) in my school worked together and gather a large amount of cloths for refugees but we couldn't find a way to transport them to refugee camps. So a teacher and a group of students visited the local Meyor and asked his help. Finally, together with other schools and Meyor's help we managed to send the cloths to refugee camps. The children enjoyed it and felt that they did something really useful to society.

although we do not have migrant students in our school we organized an event last year in a central square of my he town where in collaboration with parents, local authorities and local press we put a real boat in the centre of the square where we gathered clothes, food, shoes and other really necessary objects for the newly come immigrants. school children participated by collecting the items, putting tem on the boat and organizing along with their teachers a small welcoming event with songs performed by the school choir. it was really amazing and all the children liked it a lot.

In my school there is a great project called “SCUOLA AMICA” (FRIENDLY SCHOOL) which is linked to UNICEF programmes whose aims are: creating a community of schools which are engaged in teaching human rights and how to defend them, in teaching active citizenship, in teaching students to be active part of the society and to act for creating a better life for everyone. That’s why I think we are doing our best to put these themes in our didactic practice. Last month on 21st November we celebrated the Convention on the Rights of the Child through an exhibition titled “Deidiridei. Voices only Voices”. It was meant to help adults to think of all the children whose rights were denied.
We must adopt this kind of “RespAct” because it’s necessary not to be passive viewers but active citizens.

I think that it’s a very interesting project, but it’s hard to do in Italian schools because of need of prepared teachers. Afterward not all the schools have large sites where the kids can practise sports and social activities. However in my school we usually do role games with new migrants.

Definitely not 'easy to create projects to help concretely foreign pupils newly arrived in Italy, but in our school luckily we cooperate with experts from a special center that helps for 2 hours twice a week these children overcome language difficulties or integrative and positive results are evident in the majority of cases.

The major problem is that in Katochi there is xenophobia towards newly arrived refugees. This is obvious at the pupils’ written expression, as they reflect their families’ attitude towards newly arrived refugees. Therefore the local society of Katochi must be sensibilized towards this matter. The local church could take such an initiative, as religion plays a significant role to the lives of the local people.

No supportive network will work (let alone RespAct project) if the xenophobia mentioned above does not extinct as soon as possible.

In Greece there were a lot of programms for the integration of Muslim students, for Roma students , for immigrant students from Ex Soviet Union and all helped them a lot to integrate in the state schools and learn in a better way the Greek language. For the refugee students there a lot of programms from NGOs, from the UNICEF and school teachers and municipalities are encouraged to offer volunteer work to help those people. In 2014 -2015 clothes and food were gathered all over Greece for the refugees. Many of them stay in camps and this is a drama especially for the children.

I am in contact with the local Cultural Club and we plan to organize traditional dance lessons among the local population and the refugees. The local members will teach greek dances to the refugees and the converse. In addition, i plan to arrange a visiting of the local students to the camp in order to understand the refugees' living condition. In the same time, all the kids are going to take part to sports activities and have fun together.

it's a good idea to let the new students to acquire some autonomy with these projects. In my school, they are involved in projects with the locals. I remember some had to do a presentation about their countries, the result was not bad but the outcome was huge success.

I think that Jana’s sugestions are very important in order to build confidence and awareness about ourselves and the community where we live.

It’s very interesting how to develop consciousness and positive feelings and understand how can we manage in order to realize improvement in the environement and between people.

In my town there are lot of associations and we particularly work with Musicfor peace that involve student in workshop experiences in order to undestand what are the difficulties near us and in the world.

Community-based projects, sports and video modules are really great ways to integrate migrants in school and furthermore society. In addition to sports and technology , I would recommend music and theatre activities , that could be presented in the local society. RespAct project ideas require colaborative work from the teachers and involucration of the local authorities thus it could be tricky to accomplish without support from the school's headmaster etc.

I think that this is an excellent project! Music and Arts can bring closer all the students, strengthen the sense of being part of a community and help the migrant students communicate in a creative way.

Schools in Greece try to open up to the community, to show the work done and be appreciated by the local community to foster cooperation with authorities, but also among citizens in order for schools to promote active citizenship. Such programmes are projects each school develops either at school level or those which invole cooperation with other european schools, such as the eTwinning ones. They usually center on social problems, practise discussion, participation and presentation skills and build community awareness. They give students a sense of belonging both to the school and to the local community, thus empowering Ss and building up their confidence.

I like the ideas proposed by the RespAct group. I think that involving the local community in school projects empowers the feeling of belonging to a cerain area at all parties. Especially, migrants become aware of their new homes and share experiences with the locals. Sports, art, music, eco actions are excellent projects that can be applicable in any context.

My school have some sport activity projects, are playful paths and approach to sports in the area, with the presence of experts of CONI in collaboration with the Common. This synergy provides a suitable background to network on the topic of "sports citizenship" from a legal point of view, in order to promote measures for greater social inclusion, and for greater recognition of the value and the individual merits.

I am fully agree with the teacher. Her project based on sports, sharing ideas seems really helpful. Using sports all cultural differencies disappears.

Some of the Respact project ideas have already been adopted by my school (games drawn on the school yard, cleaning up the playground and decorating the school walls) with great enthusiasm. Motion and rhythm are every child's natural characteristic so why not use them to make cultural differences disappear?

We're a traditional society with close connection and mutual-aid networks. And we're proud of it. Our school activities are naturally inter-related with local community and institutions. So: my afternoon reading project is open to everyone wants to attend. Our social science students collaborate with lower grades teachers in kindergarten. My students work three hours a week in a local hospital granting basic assistance. Our international theatre project involves the local community. We paint our classrooms, we maintain our garden and schoolyard together on a voluntary basis... We have got a great experience from this point of view.

There are a lot of associations and groups in my area. There is a great will to help, maybe it would be more collaborative. So the school is an important part of a powerfull activity on the refugees and new arrived people. I think that some project sport-based or music- based could be valid for these people and for the community too.

This is an excellent example since it helps schools open up to community. Community-based projects, in general, encourage students to develop a sense of belonging, be open-minded and critical -thinking, build their confidence but also realise their responsibilities as future citizens.
Exchanging visits between refugee camps and school and organizing music, dance or sports events could be some ideas.

A project based teaching approach like this one really helps out all children to develop skills related to civility, social inclusion, etc. However, I do have to say that, while migrant children might participate in these kinds of projects, I believe that they themselves might not be ready to be aleader in one of these campaigns (for example, something from the community awareness strand), because they first have to feel safe to raise their own voice, and I unfortunately think that is not the case in most places. That is why previous steps from this module (making children feel welcome and safe, providing them with education that best suits their needs) is crucial for an action such as RespAct to truly involve migrant children.

As far as I remember I've always found these kind of projects in almost all the schools I 've taught. School are always trying to collaborate as much as possible with the communities they are part of and they do it in many different ways. Jana mentioned the Mayor Game: in many of our school there are projects promoting civic knowledge and skills, creating a Students City Council, with the same structure and functions of the real one, which regularly meets, discusses, analyses the community issues - from the students' point of view - and then reports and collaborate with the real City Council to take concrete action. Our school often participate to some official celebrations, contributing with the students' orchestra performance, presenting the students' own reflections and thoughts.

I didn't know the RespAct project and I found it very interesting.
I would like to involve my class in the future, because I think that many of my students need to "be actively engaged in shaping their environment and in protecting themselves from violence."
I'd like to organize talks and debates about different themes, such as the ones proposed in the video: gender equality, addictions, violence, integration. And I'd like to involve my students in social engagement projects such as voluntary work.
