Paved roads were cleaner, smoother, and easier for horses and people to move across than the dirt paths that cities previously had. These new paved roads allowed stage coaches to easily roll along the smooth terrain, making them faster and more pleasant to ride in, as well as made roads easier to walk along for horses and people. The roads themselves were made up of mud laid across small stones and gravel with ditches on either side of the road for rain water to collect in.
