Jean Louise is now 26 years old and is in love (kinda) with Henry, one of her and Jem's childhood friends who was taken under Atticus' wing. When she comes home she is immediately repulsed by an anti black pamphlet called the black plague and the fact that her father and Henry are in the Citizen's council meeting where the speakers are spouting all the racist non-sense they can. This causes a downward spiral in her trust in Atticus and her whole family and she starts to question what happened while she was away. She thinks that Maycomb doesn't want her anymore. Accompanied by childhood flashbacks, she makes the decision to get as far away from that city as possible which finally climaxes in her confronting her father and Henry about what she saw and heard. It isn't until she is just about to leave that Uncle Jack quite literally smacks some sense into her and tells her why her family is doing what they're doing. They're doing it to protect even when it doesn't seem like it. It's a very confusing story as you can tell if you read any review on the book. Personally, I like the fact that Harper Lee was brave enough to take a stand on a subject so controversial and she has no fear of telling it how she sees it. You get to see Jean Louise set her own watchman, her own conscious instead of always staying behind Atticus'. The American Protective Association, organized in 1887, reflected the attitude of many Americans who believed that the nation was being swamped by alien people. Another reason for racism and the klan entering the south is  World War I, which had a wrenching, unsettling effect on the nation. On the European battlefields, white Americans again were exposed to unrestrained bloodshed while blacks served in the uniform of their country and saw open up before them a new world. Back at home, Americans learned suspicion, hatred and distrust of anything alien. One of the reasons for the Klan staying in power for so long is the fact that the government would often let them off the hook and wouldn't acknowledge the wrong doings of the klan. During a court case involving the Klan leader and his actions, he disavowed any link between his Klan and the nightriders of reconstruction days, and he denied — just as forrest (a former leader of the klan) had done 50 years earlier — any knowledge of or responsibility for the violence. The committee adjourned without action, and the Klan benefited from all the publicity. During the 1940s, bigots began to howl more loudly than in years, and a new Klan leader began to beat the drums of anti-black, anti-union, anti-Jew, anti-catholic and anti-communist hatred. This man was Samuel Green, an Atlanta doctor. Green managed to reorganize the Klan in california, Kentucky, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, South carolina, Tennessee, florida and Alabama. Green is a big reason why the Klan did the horrible things they did before the Klan was disassembled under law.
