Underclass:
-The underclass are a new social class that have appeared under the working class, Charles Murray (1989). People in this class are the poorest members within society; consisting of the unemployed, single parent families and people who are sick/disabled who cannot work.
-In the media the underclass tend to have a negative portrayal and are seen as a threat to the norms and values in society.
-Price (2014) labelled some tv programmes that focus on the poorest living in society (Benefit Street for example) as poverty porn. Poverty porn is were media portrays the of the poor in exploitive way to gain sympathy.

Working Class:
-The working class consists of people who tend to work for wages and don't have much wealth or power within society.
-Media representations of the working class include portrayals of the traditional working class communities (EastEnders and Coronation Street). These portrayals are there to create nostalgia as it is showing a working class community that working class people don't really live now.
-Newman (2006) argues that there are not many sitcoms/tv dramas out there that truly represent the everyday life of people within the working class.

Middle Class:
-The middle class are the class between the upper and working classes. these are people are wealthy and can live comfortably and include business people and professionals; along with their families.
-in the media it is argued that there is an over-representation of this class in the media (in soap operas, dramas and sitcoms). in the media they are presented as educated, successful and able to cope with life's problems; they are also seen as representing the norm in society.
-Marxists argue that with these representations it promotes ruling class ideology. for example, people in the middle class are portrayed as deserving of their success because of their hard work and talent. Marxists believe that this creates a type of false class consciousness--forced into believing that social inequality is due to the middle class deserving their success rather than them having unequal life chances.
-however, pluralists argue that media representations of the middle class are accurately reflecting the way media consumers perceive their society.

Upper Class:
-Upper class are the highest class within society. They have the most wealth and power within society.
-Media representations of the upper class tends to surround the Royal Family.
