Kelly, thank you for this new tool and for walking us through it so carefully. I now have the confidence to try this approach with my students. I also like that they will look at several examples and models of writing, as readers, and as writers. It would be interesting to note if certain genres also rely on more areas of BEAM than others! Your presentation style was so calm and welcoming! Thank you.--Daina

Such a useful, hands-on presentation. Some of the concepts are difficult/slippery, but you gave me a ton of food for thought on ways I can use mentor texts to help raise students' awareness of how they are using sources-- and to vary their source use. This is super applicable to the education blogs I'm having students work on in 104D, so thank you! I've been looking for ways to increase the challenge of that assignment. I appreciate your clear, calm, impeccably organized presentation.

-Lisa

I love this! I would like 5 more demos on this topic :) there is so much good stuff here. I love that students are looking at how outside sources are brought into mentor text. One of your student quotes nailed it when they said this would translate into their writing! Stealing!

I loved the students reflections at the end! I can see myself totally teaching BEAM to help students analyze sources in articles and help separate sources into categories to better understand text. Thanks for the deeper level of thinking today!

Kimberly

I think the toughest thing for me to teach students is how to use source material when they're writing, especially when writing literary analyses. This might be something to try - maybe even with some of my sample papers from my demo that I've analyzed with students. It's clear that much of the time, my students just pick quotations or facts from the novel totally at random without understanding that they don't actually do what they're telling me it does, and that disconnect has proven quite a sticking point for me as a teacher and them as students. This gives me another option for showing students that what they choose actually has a function. Thanks!

I can see how this really helps bring students to the next level. I love that it is cross- curricular and really reinforces reading to write, writing to read! Thank you for this demo, I will put it into practice as I read. Great work! Thank you!
Amanda G

Thank you Kelly for a fabulous demo on something that we haven't really touched yet - analyzing sources! I have never thought about how to teach students a different between the sources they use to support their points and love the distinction between the four types. Teaching students this type of analysis will strengthen both their own writing and ability to understand rhetorical arguments in their reading. So useful, rigorous, and applicable! -Jamie

I love this! I mentioned this earlier in the small group, but I love that the focus is on the purpose of the source. I can totally seem myself having students looking WHY they are selecting that specific source. I can see this being particularly helpful at the high school level as they move into college also.

Thank you for giving us time to practice applying the concepts. I can see how using BEAM can help students to better understand a writer's intent and the relevance and credibility of the evidence. Their confidence as readers and writers will definitely improve as they are able to deconstruct texts. This is a useful tool and can be used in many contexts. You are teaching them (and us) life skills. Thank you for sharing!
Brooke
