Hunter's Conclusion pt. 1: What can the community do to help the transgender people that are being negatively affected by the community? How have transgenders made a difference in their community?

In conclusion, the community isn’t doing enough to help transgender people in their community. This statistics show this very well a 2011 survey conducted by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and National Center for Transgender Equality showed that 41% of trans people had attempted suicide, as compared to 1.6% of the general population. This shows that people are just brushing aside the fact that these people need help and bully them for being different to themselves, this doesn’t apply to everyone, in some communities there are very good people who accept trans people for who they are and give these trans people a purpose. The Lgbtq+ movement having parallels to the civil rights movement in the 1950’s, hopefully the trans people can eventually feel equal to everyone else and not be told who or what they are by someone that doesn’t know them,

In conclusion people who are rejected by family often feel very sad and depressed and sometimes can feel suicidal. I think this really is not ok because they shouldn't have to feel like they are alone when they are not. When they are finally what nature denied them they should feel happy, not sad, depressed or even suicidal. There should be much more support for people who have just had the surgery and still adjusting from becoming a new gender.

In conclusion, I feel like the community, family and friends aren’t doing well in supporting and helping transgenders when they need it. Transgenders are not being accepted and are struggling to fit in with the stereotype. For example, wearing ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ colors that is accordingly to our the society. Accordingly to a wellbeing survey of 8500 New Zealand secondary school students was taken in 2012, approximately 4 out of 100 students was reported that they were transgender and 40% of transgenders had a significant depressive symptoms and are unable to access health care when they need it. Transgenders feel like they are valued less than other people and are feeling exhausted, depressed and then anxiety sets in. Getting rejected from their family and disowning their child could lead to suicide because they feel so miserable and hated.

I think they as a person will be sad and depressed and it could lead to suicide. I think that people that have a child want the best for them and they think the best thing is for them to stay as the same gender that they were born with. I think that as a transgender you are faced with the fact of all the people around you not agreeing with your discretion to be transgender.I think that transgender people struggle with people accepting them of who they are. E.g This 9yr old boy told his mum that he was gay and his mum was fine with that but then he told his friends that he was gay and they told him to die and then he did. They also have the struggle of the surgery that they face thinking that they can’t go through because we as New Zealanders can’t get surgery in NZ because there are not enough people that can do the surgery so having to go out of the country is not good.

http://queergrace.com/transphobia/

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/27/trans-teen-lgbt-bullying-schools-report

To be honest, there isn't enough being changed in communities and this is causing depression, anxiety, transphobia and suicide, in New Zealand a youth study done in 2012 suggests that half of the transgender youths had committed self-harm, and 20% had attempted suicide, although theses rates sound low, they are still higher than we want. Practical steps are required to prevent the considerable discrimination and mistreatment that youth trans experience, there had been some changes though, like the american civil liberties union who have formed a group to help protect and support trans youth throughout their school time.
I have learnt from the collected info that there are still developing groups intended to help trans people, but for now there is clearly not enough support, as the suicide rates are still high.

In conclusion, transgenders sometimes just know that they aren't happy being who they are. so they feel the need to change genders to become someone who they feel happy being. For this to happen it takes a bit of encouragement for them to come out the closet for example: A person who believes they were born in the wrong body and feel like they need to make a change, will need a bit of inspiration or support to help with this big step they are about to take.

I have learnt from Sam M's info that people can use ImLocal for help with transfobia ect. Transgenders can also use this website for support phone lines.

In conclusion, one thing that I learnt about my key question “Which transgender people in New Zealand made a difference and what did they do?” is that we are actually the first country in the world to have had a transgender person in parliament. According to https://nzhistory.govt.nz/page/georgina-beyer-becomes-first-transgender-woman-elected-parliament-world Georgina was a male turned female and was the mayor of Carterton between 1995 and 2000. She became the Labour Party’s candidate for the Wairarapa electorate in 1999 NZ general election and won with a majority of 3033 votes. She was particularly focused on relation to social policy and human rights including LGBTQ+ rights. I think this is important because nowadays most transgender people do find it difficult to feel and be accepted in society and let alone find jobs. I learnt that the fact that NZ is was the first to have a transgender in the higher area of jobs must have made transgenders at least at the time feel accepted and included.

I learned that it is not only just hard for the transgender but also for the families of the transgender. I also read an article on why they would take the risk of losing family. Rivera was willing to lose all of this to be happy, as she goes through a very rough life including some run ins with the law as well. I think all of the people saying that transgender was wrong made her want to prove it was right, and that is what she ended up doing.

In conclusion, families get affected when the transgender person change into a gender that they don’t like, they could feel devastated over the loss. Or they could feel guilt because they felt like they forced the transgender person to be their preferred gender. Accordingly to a Youth 12 health wellbeing survey of 8,500 New Zealand secondary school students was taken in 2012. About three quarters of transgender students reported that they had at least one parent who cared about them a lot, and the majority thought that their family got along. I think that families and the transgenders get affected heavily with the change and the parents just have to go with their choice if they disagree, supporting them and having their backs so they don’t feel depressed or even sometimes suicidal. I have learned how families do get affected and the emotions, thoughts and the actions that came out of the change.

Lucia's conclusion - How does a community embrace and accept transgenders in their community

In conclusion, one important thing learnt about my key question “How does a community embrace and accept transgenders in their community?” is that whilst some or should I say most people are ready to accept transgender people there are still quite a few that aren’t ready or don’t want to accept transgender people. According to http://embrace.today/resources-on-transgender-and-gender-expansive-youth/ there is a small town called Grass Lakes that accepts anyone and everyone for who they are and who they want to be. The town has two transgender children in their town that have started making their stand by letting the two children go to the bathroom that matches their gender identity. They also said that “When you create a safe, welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ children you make the school safer and more welcoming for every child”. I think that this town is one step ahead than the rest of us and i think that all towns and cities should be as welcoming as this one. Learning about this topic has made me realise that not everyone is not as welcoming and accepting about anyone and everyone that they oughta be.

In conclusion, one important thing I learnt about my key question is “what does transgender people make themselves feel good”. According to “research is context” it says transgender people feel accepted because this video said that most transgender people celebrate being transgender by doing either parades or a getting together. I think this is important because transgender people would feel accepted in society and they can feel secure in their home and in public. I learnt that transgender people are mostly accepted in society and that they feel welcomed and that they might feel safe and secure.

In conclusion one thing that I have learnt about the other groups key questions “ how do transgender people feel when they are rejected by their family and how do they feel if they get rejected by their community” is that people don’t accept transgender of who they are. According to “ research in context “ a 12 year old boy was threatened by his school community and by the parents of other children in the school, this is unacceptable and this needs to be fixed but in other communities transgender people are accepted as who they are. I think that this is important because transgender people commit suicide and we don’t want families crying over their child’s death, we can fix this by accepting people for who they are now not who they were in the past. I have learnt that transgender people are like everyone else and they just want to be treated fairly and kindly.

In conclusion, one important thing I learnt about my key question ¨How do transgenders cope in a community?¨ is that not everyone is as accepting as others and many transgenders are rejected by their friends and family. According to This Link it says that there are many benefits of transgenders that are different in many ways, in this article it said that a benefit that one trans person enjoys, another might not experience at all. I think that this is important for a transgender person to feel happy in life and feel good about themselves by experiencing something that others probably won't experience. I have learnt that transgenders aren't always accepted by others with their choice of being transgender.

In conclusion, one important thing I learnt about my key question ¨How transgenders are perceived in a community¨ is that older people don't agree with the decision on being transgender as they have always grown up to know that boys are boys and girls are girls and there is no inbetween. Although I didn't find a source for this one I believe that most transgenders can be seen positively if people actually take the time to listen to what they have to say and remember that we are all still human on the inside although they might look different on the outside. I think this is important because most transgenders are seen as being different when they actually aren't. I learnt that many people don't like to accept people for who they want to be and that they are treated a lot different for others.

In conclusion, one important thing i have learnt about the other groups question is that transgenders often get rejected by family members when making a big change such as changing from a man to a lady or a lady to a man. According to the documentary “Open door transgenders”, when a transgender doesn’t feel welcome by family members they go down a very dark road feeling the need to take their own life because family won’t accept who they have decided to become or they don’t like the fact that they are transgender. I have learnt that this is important because, it goes to show that even when you may or may not agree with someone in your family still show the support towards them as it may help them a lot with what they are going though.

In conclusion, one thing I learnt about my key question: How do transgenders families feel and react to their child/children being transgender and what problems in the future will they encounter?, is that transgenders overcome so many struggles in life, even simple ones like which bathrooms, changing rooms, ect to use. According to this website: http://queergrace.com/transphobia/ transgenders have so many problems to face and how you can help solve them. I think this is highly important because transgenders are humans too and they deserve to be treated like everyone else. Just because they are different doesn't mean we can bully them because it is really important that they feel accepted!

This website down below helps you answer questions like how do I know I am transgender?, or am I normal? :)
