Cory, Troy and Bono are discussing the fence that Rose wants to build around their house. Troy thinks that there's no reason for the fence. And Cory would rather be playing football then be bothered with unimportant matters such as building a fence. Troy and Bono begin to discuss Troy and Rose's marriage. Bono tells Troy that he know how much Rose loves Troy. He warns Troy that trying to have a wife and a mistress will end in spiraling chaos. Troy sees Bono's warning as mediocre and believes that he can still keep peace and dominance in his household while living a double life with Alberta. Eventually he will have to drop one of them. The scene ends with Bono and Troy making a beat. If Troy finishes building Rose a fence, then Bono will buy his wife Lucille a refrigerator.
Literary Devices
The setting comes to play in this scene, because the reader can imagine this conversation taking place in the dirt yard of the Maxson house, and can picture Troy, Bono, and Cory working on the fence in the heat of the day.
Symbolism is also used in reference to the fence. which is a way for Rose to keep her family together, but to Troy is a trap; a restriction from being free to do as he pleases.
Blues comes into play in this scene because of Bono repeatedly warning Troy to break hi affair, for Rose is a good woman, and that Troy has a good heart. And in the blues, phrases repeat within a line of melody. The way the characters talk reflects the blues; the struggles and conflicts African Americans face daily. Troy with his affair and trying to uphold his family, and Bono, as his friend, trying to save his friend from himself.

Wilson never allows us into that part of Rose's thinking, so the fence, like Bono's description, leaves the observer to interpret the meaning of the fence for themselves. Bono's poignant observation of why Rose wants the fence built contributes to Bono's success in pushing Troy to admit the truth about his affair. Troy's confession to Bono causes a disturbance, or a major reversal, in Troy's behavior and leads to the rising action escalating in Troy's admission of his affair to Rose, which ultimately shatters their marriage, though they still live together.

His reference to the people who build fences to push people away from them is indirectly directed at Troy who, with his affair, will eventually hurt his wife and who is already in the midst of hurting his son Cory by preventing him from a hopeful future. We never learn the practical reason why Rose wants the fence built. Perhaps she wants Troy and Cory to bond while making a fence together. Perhaps she thinks it is a way to keep her eye on Troy.

Bono clarifies the significance of the play's title as the action rises and nears the climax of the scene. In a profound moment of compassion, Bono spells out to Cory and Troy the reason Rose wants the fence built. His reason is a metaphor not a literal interpretation. Bono sees Rose's fence as a defining symbol of her qualities as a wife and mother, correctly fearing her family's relationships are falling apart. Bono observes that the fence is symbolic of both the negative and positive aspects of the Maxson family.

The conversation that Troy and Bono have forshadows events that occur later in the play. When Bono says "I know what Rose means to you, Troy. I'm just trying to say I don't want to see you mess up"(227). He is warning Troy that sooner or later Rose will discover the affair. Bono understands that what Troy is doing is wrong and that he will end in a disaster if he does not stop. All of Bono's comments about Rose being a good woman are ment to warn Troy of his impending future.

Until this moment, Troy has lived in denial about his affair, allowing himself the luxury of believing in and escaping to a world of illusions with Alberta, separate from his real-life responsibilities and disappointments. By announcing out loud to Bono the truth, Troy begins to make real the betrayal he has committed to himself. Unfortunately for Troy, his timing is too late. Alberta is pregnant; creating another realized form of his betrayal that will not be erased. Troy and Rose argue about Gabe's recent arrest and decision to move out, driving the rising action forward and steeping Troy and Rose in the unsatisfying bickering of their failing relationship.

Rose's involvement in Gabe's life also expresses how closely linked Troy's family is with her own life, a stark contrast to the lover, Alberta who is a stranger with no familial duties. This fact is maybe why Troy connects with her, for she is a way for him to escape his daily duties and life.

When Bono and Troy have a conversation Troy is still in denial over that fact that what he is doing is wrong. Bono, however, understands that this situation is not going to end well for Troy not matter what happens. He expresses this when he says "That's why I don't want to see you hurt her. But what you gonna do when she find out? What you got then? If you try and juggle both of them...sooner or later you gonna drop one of them." (227). This remark is forshadowing when Rose discovers the affair and Troy losses both Rose and Alberta. Bonos entire conversation with Troy forshadows the falling action when Troy tells Rose about the affair. leaving him with nothing except his own guilt.

At the opening of the scene, Troy and Cory come to a consensus on the fact that they are confused with Rose's obsession with building a fence. " 'I don't know see why Mama want a fence around the yard noways.' 'Damn if I know either. What the hell she keeping out with it? She ain't got nothing nobody want.'" (226). Troy and Cory see the fence as a drag and reluctantly work on finishing it. To Rose it represents love and nurturing
