My name is Brittany Jewell and I teach 3-5 year olds not only school skills, but life skills as well! I went to school for Early Childhood Education as well as Special Education. I believe that every child has the potential to succeed when given the correct building blocks. Learning isn't a one size fits all so I believe educators and parents should be flexible when it comes to teaching by using the child's known strengths to bump up their weaker areas. I choose gentle teaching methods with firm rules and regular consequences for certain actions (both good and bad!) 

It is important to have some kind of regular schedule, particularly for younger students, but it is a positive for all ages, including adults. I like to keep the layout of my days the same for specific days and times while changing up individual activities to keep the day fun and fresh. I am conscious and sensitive to any needs you and your little one may have so don't hesitate to share anything you think may help me understand you and your little one as much as possible, including allergies, religions, languages spoken in the home, and any other preferences! 

I place an emphasis on accepting everyone as they are so that, hopefully, students will never feel the need to hide any part of their personality. In my classroom there are no girl toys or boy toys there are just toys! There are no girl jobs or boy jobs they are just jobs! Through play we cover life skills that can be built on later, such as always cleaning up after ourselves, having good manners, and taking care of ourselves and each other.

2. Make and play with your own Playdough! -This activity allows students to be a part of the process and lets them choose their own colors. Once the playdough is made it can be used for sensory play using things you have around the house such as cookie cutters, rolling pins, safety scissors (this is also a great time to practice scissor skills and safety, two in one!), forks/spoons, large Legos, shaped blocks, and of course hands and anything else you think of. It is also fantastic for fine motor skill development.

3. ABC Parking Lot! -This can help with letter recognition and fine motor skills. You'll need 26 toy cars, letters of the alphabet (magnetic or printed from the computer, it's totally up to you!), some sort of flat surface (a table, the floor, poster board, cardboard, etc.), a marker, a ruler, and painters tape. All you have to do is measure out parking spaces big enough for your letters and cars and write a letter on each car, then just let your little one drive the cars around and park them in the correct parking spot! 
To make it more advanced try doubling the number of cars and doing both upper and lower case for each letter. These cars can also be used for spelling or practicing sight words if they are up for it.

4. Reading Together! -This helps teach students to read on their own and increases vocabulary, imagination, focus, and observation and listening skills. Choose a story together and read it slowly, letting your little one ask questions and asking them questions about the story or the pictures.                This is the CDC website with milestones from 2 months old to 5 years old. In my class we have 3-5 year old students so these are things I will be on the lookout for. This list can help you to see where your child is at for their age based on what you see at home.
