         <description><![CDATA[<div>Preventing Scurvy - Because Ross traveled for such long periods of time, he worked to make sure his crew was well fed.  He found that feeding them fruits, vegetables and animal fats was important.  </div><div>South Magnetic Pole - <br>Discovering its location was important for science.  The magnetic field is strongest at the pole and weakest at the equator. </div><div>Ross wrote a book about his research so that others could learn about what he discovered.  This was good for scientists. </div><div><br></div>]]></description>

Sir James Clark Ross made discoveries that impacted the knowledge of researchers and explorers around the Arctic area. </div><div>KNOWLEDGE: Sir James Clark Ross did many expeditions to places that few people had been.  He researched magnetism and sea animals at great depths. Sir James Ross Clark became the leading authority on arctic research.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Explorers brought over new diseases like the plague, chicken pox and whopping cough. The native people got sick and died (almost 90% of the population). <br>Explorers cut down trees to grow crops and worked the soil which took nutrients from the land, especially along the Northeastern forests (Pennsylvania). They used axes, saws and horses to cut down trees. New plants and animals were brought to the land and some native plants and animals died. New Plants included: wheat, rice, oats, barley and coffee. New animals included: horses, cattle, goats, sheep and chickens. </div>]]></description>
