A urine pH level test is a painless test done at a private health screening centre to analyse the level of acidity or alkalinity of a urine sample. The pH level of a urine sample can be affected by several factors such as diet, diseases, and intake of medicines. This test can be used as a general indicator to know how healthy you are and gives your doctor an insight as to what is going on in your body.

A result that is too high or too low is an indication that the body is likely to form kidney stones. With this warning, you can alter your diet to reduce your chances of having kidney stones.

Why Do I Need a Urine pH Level Test?

This test is necessary during private health checks because it can help detect kidney stones on time. Kidney stones are small masses of minerals that collect in the kidney and cause pain during urination. Kidney stones prevent urine from passing through the urinary system. These stones form in a highly acidic or alkaline environment.

You may need a urine pH level test if your doctor wants to check the effect of a medication on your urine pH level and decide which medicine is best for you if you have a urinary tract infection.

How is a Urine pH Level Test Performed?

Before the test, your doctor may ask you to avoid medications that are known to affect the pH of the urine like

Acetazolamide- used in the treatment of glaucoma, epilepsy, and other disorders

Sodium bicarbonate- used to treat heartburns and acid indigestion

Methenamine mandelate- used to treat urinary tract infections

Ammonium chloride- a component of cough medicines

Thiazide diuretics- used to treat high blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attacks

Potassium citrate- used to treat gout and kidney stones.

It is important not to change your diet before the test, except instructed to do so by the doctor. The food you eat affects your urine pH, and the essence of the test is to determine your typical and accurate urine pH.

The right result will be gotten when a midstream urine sample is collected for the test. A clean catch method is used to get your midstream urine. In this method, your doctor will clean your genital area before you urinate, then the urine will be collected midstream. This process will eliminate the intervention of specific pathogens and microorganisms.

The doctor will need a sample of your urine inside a container that will. It is vital to make sure you do not let anything other than the urine into the container to prevent contamination of the sample. After urinating into the container using the clean catch method, you will hand it over to the medical staff who will send it to the laboratory for the test to be performed.

What Do the Results Mean?

A neutral pH is 7.0. If the result is a higher number, it means your urine is alkaline while a lower number indicates acidic urine. A normal urine sample should have a pH of 6.0.

An acidic environment facilitates the development of kidney stones and other conditions such as:

Acidosis

Diarrhoea

Diabetic ketoacidosis

Starvation

Dehydration.

An alkaline environment is an indication of

Kidney failure

Pyloric obstruction

Gastric suctioning

Urinary tract infection

Respiratory alkalosis.

A diet low in meat but high in fruits and vegetables is more likely to make your urine alkaline while higher consumption of meat can make your urine acidic. If your urine pH level is too high or low, your doctor may recommend you change your diet.

Frequently Asked Question about Urine pH level and Pregnancy

Does the ph of a pregnant woman's urine determine the sex of the child?

There are so many gender kits in the market that claim to check the gender of a baby using the pH of the urine. However, they are not accurate. It’s just like guessing a true or false question because there is no scientific relationship between the foetus and pH of the urine. The pH of the urine is mostly affected by diet and other clinical conditions.

You can get your urine pH level tested during your private health screening at Health Screening Clinic in London or call us on 020 71837056 to make enquiries about a urine pH level test
