Environmental interaction

Together with some colleagues from Radboud University (and also some external colleagues), we are working on a research project concerning climate crisis interaction. We collect qualitative data from tv-/talk shows, news interviews, podcasts, and other related naturally occurring data in which topics around climate change are discussed (e.g., veganism, air travel, consumerism, governmental policies, etc.). We are currently still working on data collection, but our goal is to write a series of papers using Conversation Analysis to analyze the data. Eventually, we aim to make our database publicly available, so that other researchers can use and/or add cases to it as well.

A timeline is not yet available, but please contact maartje.roodzant@ru.nl if you are interested or if you have any follow-up questions. We would be happy to keep you updated.

Together with Annayah Prosser, Madeleine Pownall and Tamarinde Haven, we announce this call to co-create an Open Qualitative Research Community oriented to the European research, funding and policy landscape. We envision this community as a way to foster support, collaboration, and epistemically appropriate science reform. QualiFAIR at University of Oslo

QualiFAIR hub at University of Oslo was a university-wide project in years 2021-2024. The project focused on how to increase sharing and reuse of qualitative and context-sensitive data, making them more FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). QualiFAIR is now formally completed but you can find many presentation slides and training materials on the website, with some more to come! More reports and write-ups from the project, with some concrete recommendations on making qualitative data more FAIR, are also coming up.

ReDemOS: Democratizing knowledge production

ReDemOS is a new research project (2025-2029) at the University of Oslo with a particular focus on qualitative research and the unintended consequences of the open science movement.

In ReDemOS, researchers from psychology, linguistics, education, meta-science and criminology are brought together to investigate how the demands of the open science of today affect qualitative research on people in vulnerable life situations and explore different models on how to democratise research.

COP 4 ONOD (Community of Practice for Naturally Occurring Data)

The project COP 4 ONOD (Community of Practice for Naturally Occurring Data) brings together research support staff and qualitative researchers who work with naturally occurring data.

Naturally occurring data are considered “high value” due to the costs and time saved in their collection, as well as their potential for (re-)analysis and (re-)use. Simultaneously, the act of “opening up” naturally occurring data presents several challenges – including the well-known clash between data privacy and data openness —which currently restricts their widespread sharing and reuse.

We are currently in the process of making available several resources (such as a template informed consent form and a FAQ relating to the topic of sharing naturally occurring data). So please stay tuned!
