Chapter 3:
In this chapter, we get a closer look at Emi’s life with her new foster parents, Meili and Jim, who live out in the woods in Maine. Emi is still getting used to living with them after losing her mom and going through several other foster homes. One of the big highlights is when they take her to the animal shelter to pick out a dog. That’s when she meets Max, a dog who’s been stuck there for a long time because he always tries to run away. Even though Max is a bit wild and isn’t easy to handle, Emi feels drawn to him and decides he’s the right dog for her. There’s a lot of humor, too, like how Max always pees in her bedroom doorway in the morning. We also get to see things from Max’s point of view, and he’s still figuring out Emi and what “home” really means to him.

Chapter 4:
Now that Max is living with Emi, the two start to bond, but things aren’t perfect. Max is still a flight risk, and Emi works hard to keep him out of trouble. Emi is also trying to get along with Meili and Jim, who actually seem to care about her. But when Meili and Jim share big news that their family is going to change, Emi feels worried about being left out or forgotten again. She starts to think about what “home” really means and worries that she might lose this one, too. Meanwhile, Max goes on his small adventures and meets Red, a clever cat who lives wild and free in the woods. All three—girl, dog, and cat—are learning to survive, trust each other, and maybe find a real family.

Chapter 9 - Summary

Emi is still trying to train Max. Once he obeyed a couple of commands she took Max outside and took off his collar. Max attempted escape #11 and he was successful. Unfortunately, he didn't realize how cold and hungry he would be. He quickly started to regret his decision.

Chapter 16 - Recap

Emi continued to search for Max, but slipped into the roaring river, and it pulled her under. She fought the river as hard as she could and then managed to swim to the side just before she went over the waterfall.
