This first person novel by Joseph Bruchac is packed with thought and will give you a deeper understanding of many subjects.. The story is about the Navajo Marines of WWII. This book shows the progression of Americans attitudes toward the Navajos superbly. First, they were hated and abused, then they were needed and served their crucial part in the war, then they were appreciated for their service. Amazing book brings great perspective to the Navajo Indians history and struggles. Also full of very rational thought by the main character ans action packed.

Rates 8/10 on the Ellisgauge©

Hard; vocabulary is not difficult but very deep connections and meanings.

This first person novel by Linda Greenlaw explores the adventures of a female captain in the nearly all male industry of sword fishing. It is an extremely compelling story on one trip out into the Atlantic. And the struggles of trying to fill the hold, earn money, and stay safe. This is one of my favorite books because a lot of the story happens around the Maine coast and I know all of the places mentioned, and can relate to the struggles of fisherman and the love for the ocean.

Rates 10/10 on the Ellisgauge©

Hard - many difficult fishing terms (vocabulary) and a lot of symbolism.
