I enjoyed exploring the different platforms yesterday and seeing what's out there. Again, the podcast thing, AWESOME!

But I also noticed there are some limitations when applied to Math. It seems most AI platforms are language based, so articles, reading text etc. are what it does best. It is more difficult to apply Math that involves examples and actual doing of work. I imagine the explanations and vocab will be better suited.

My focus will continue to be how to apply this to my students.

-Jason

I learned the ramifications of bias and the delivery of information to the end user. It drove home that the end users must be aware or at least critical of what is being presented to ascertain that bias can play a part in what they are seeing; and how will they address this. I took this article and copied and pasted into the Magic School App and had it rewritten for fifth grade students; I was curious how the information would be presented, because I believe that young people are definitely susceptible to believing biased information as fact. The rewrite was still above their reading level in some areas, but was definitely more accessible with teacher intervention.

I was surprised that if a person agrees to something as innocuous as photographing medical treatment, it could show up as part of an AI output. This makes me more cognitive of what I am agreeing to, and will make me ask for more clarification on my permission.

I chose the article in the middle right, with the image of face recognition. It discusses different ways that AI can inherit biases through development and learning. Some examples are through inherent bias from creators, or through data set or test data that only represents a small section of people. They gave an example of a study done with only information from 3 states and asked if that would accurately translate to reflect the populations in other parts of the country.

This made me wonder about test sets or data sets that are being gathered now. Today some people have negative feelings at the thought of using AI, or even technology. So I wonder about how data might be collected. Is it voluntary? If yes, would it misrepresent the whole because those sections of people might not be part of the test data.

-Jason

Moral Machines

Something that struck me from the article "6 Ethical Considerations," were the moral concerns of relying on AI too much. I understand and appreciate this point of view - but I also see it as a response to industries asking their work force to do too much. Where is their ethical and moral obligation to ensure workers . . . aren't overworked and asked to do too much. I see my husband that works at Kaplan Education forced into many roles and AI as a tool to help him do his job and not be owned by his job. I see it as a tool to help me write a quick email so I can in turn spend more time with my family.

I was not surprised by the bias. With AI being a reflection of society, which is not in the best place at the moment, I would expect it to show all aspects of the human condition and human bias's. To me it helps illustrate the implicit bias, white privilege, sexualization of women, and bigotry which many try to explain away or don't believe exists.

As my students are younger I will be the one primarily using AI - but will ensure they understand that it is not a perfect tool and has many flaws. I am also sure to and will continue to maintain the privacy of my students when using AI. The privacy and healthcare implications does freak me out! I loved the movie Gattaca - but don't want to live it in real life!

I've run into this as a way to introduce a lesson and students need to study the poster to find clues about what might be coming up and what we'll be studying.

It was a super simple prompt: "create a realistic movie poster of me starring in an action movie called "The Next Step" include the major theme of 8th grade mathematics and minor theme of hockey" It of course said it couldn't do an accurate picture of me because it didn't have my picture, but would instead do a generic action hero.

-Jason

Pedagogical Biases in AI-Powered Educational Tools

This study was very interesting, although not surprising. The researchers created lessons using three different AI platforms and then examined these lessons through the lenses of student agency and classroom dialogue. They found that very few of the generated lessons incorporated dialogue (interactive and collaborative meaning-making) or student agency (student-generated inquiries). Instead, they found that the lessons primarily reverted to outdated teacher-centric and rote-learning models. I think recognizing this bias when using AI platforms to help plan lessons is crucial for teachers trying to save time by designing lessons.

I read, 6 Ethical Considerations of Artificial Intelligence. If explored a myriad of concerns broken into six clear areas. I appreciated the examples and solution format as many concerns are very timely. Unfortunately, there have been way too many data breaches, lately! I appreciated the sections on bias and deep fake which connect to some of the AI lessons included in the PM Choice board. This article and lesson slides you included before lunch really allowed me to think about how bias plays into how and what is searched and discussed heavily in our eighth-grade civics curriculum.

I enjoyed the deep dive into some of the ethical questions, bias, and deep fakes. While it was a lot of information, I feel I have some core activities to address questions students and parents may have about AI as district expectations are developed. Seventh graders are very tech savvy and go to chat GPT often, but often tattle on peers' use. Having a protocol and providing background on how to use AI well would be quite helpful to my team! I am excited to adapt materials using AI thoughtfully as not only something exciting and new but as an example of effective use of AI tools.

I was able to start this design in Canva and finesse it in GPT. I'm hoping to use it as a logo for my Therapeutic Program. I also used the prompts to create a more streamlined - progress monitoring system which I am excited to edit and implement. I'd love to try and make more videos - but I haven't had too much luck there. I realize I need to input more material to get out a better video response.

The bias information was also so important to keep in mind and reflect on.
