Why do some believe that the activism of the Parkland students— and the activism they’ve inspired across the country— will be a “tipping point” in the issue of gun violence? Do you agree? Explain, using evidence from the article and other media (news clips, interviews, etc.)to support your response. Respond to two of your classmates.

Yes, I do agree that the Parkland students taking a stand against gun violence is the "tipping point" in this issue. They have gathered millions of people around the globe to fight against this problem that has been taking place in our country for so long. "There are already signs of action in statehouses across the nation, with lawmakers considering a variety of measures. (pg 9). Also since these students have actually witnessed and went through a shooting, they have a stronger influence." 'These students have great moral credibility because they speak as people directly affected by this issue,' " ( pg 10).There's something about seeing these students standing up and making speeches, organizing marches and fighting for change, that makes legislators and everyday people feel like they want to be part of this issue too.

Yes, I do agree that the activism of these Parkland students is a "tipping point" in the gun violence issue. I think that for so many years, there have been mass shootings happening over and over again, but no one decided to stop; even if people did decide to stop it, their ideas would get shut down and people would tell them “no”. So after the Parkland shooting, I think the students decided it was enough and that they had to do something about, and they didn’t let anyone get into the way of doing that. Cameron Kasky said the thing that inspired them to create the march (march for our lives) was people saying ‘you are all talking about gun control and this is not the time to talk about gun control this is the time to grieve the time to mourn’ (The Ellen Show). These high schoolers didn’t just organize speeches and talk about the issue; they got people to walk out of their schools, they organized a march to Washington D.C. and many others in every state, and some of them even met with the NRA, Senator Marco Rubio, and even Donald Trump (article). These students have made so much more progress from no one listening to getting everyone in the nation listening to them. There are already signs of action in statehouses across the nation, with lawmakers considering a variety of measures. For example, in Florida, the legislature passed a gun control bill that raises the minimum age to purchase any guns to 21 (article). I think that there is going to be some major progress because of these students and that there won’t be another mass shooting after this (IA).

Yes, I do agree that the activism the students have inspired across the nation will be a "tipping point" in the issue of gun violence. The march for our lives that was organized by the student of Parkland, is now one of the biggest marches, that took place in Washington D.C.; over 850,000 people have attended the march ( Fox news article.) Not only that, there have been 900 marches across the country on March 24 ( Face the nation.) David Hogg said that the big number of people that is one there side got politicians shaking (CNN.) School shootings and mass shootings have been happening since 1999, and today is march 24th, 2018, and nothing have been done about it ( Upfront.) These students have agreed that they had to do more then send thoughts and prayers to the staff and the students ( Upfront.) They have met NRA representatives , Senators like Marco Rubio, and Trump. The NRA representative have said that people who are "crazy" and that can hurt themselves or others should have been able to obtain guns like that (CNN,) in response Cameron have said " [ In shootings} there is no specific mental health issue that you can tie to every single one. The only thing that you can tie to every single one is weapons that belong in the hand of soldiers, in the hands of citizens who are not trained"( Face the Nation.) Since February 14th , 2018, to this day different states have been taking action in different ways. For example in Florida, the legislature in March passed a gun control bill that raises the minimum age to purchase any gun to 21, creates a three- day waiting list period for gun purchases, bans bump stocks, provides money for school security and mental health services, and creates voluntary program to arm some school personnel ( Upfront.) Also the students have been getting support inside the U.S, and out side of the U.S ( Face the Nation.) These students made time to talk about gun violence and school shootings when no time to talk about it. They will make a difference.

(Upfront) I agree that the student activism will be a tipping point in the gun violence issue. there are many students in America and it is an issue that effects everyone. Schools especially have been targets of gun violence. Schools are meant to be safe havens where children go to learn and prepare for when they have to go set off in the worlds by themselves. Everyday more and more children are being denied the chance to grow up because of decisions made by politicians that don't have to go to school everyday knowing that given the vast history of gun violence that it might be their last. in 2012 when the first major school shooting took place it was elementary grade students. With the parkland shooting it was kids of an age where they understand what it is happening and can organize something to change it. Many people underestimate what students are willing to do for causes they care about. Apparently the voices and actions of the adults weren't enough to make a difference, but maybe, just maybe the actions and opinions of the students will be.

I agree that the activism and change that the students are bringing will be a tipping point in the views on gun laws in the US. The change are bringing is influencing many to protest and support the causes of the students. Not only are they saying things lol it is wrong. They are also making the changes. You cannot just say something and not do anything about it because the results normally end up the same. The change would never come. People are walking out Of school to protest and even celebrities are speaking out about the issue. For example Cardi B had spoken out. Change is only coming and Inshaallah it will be in our favor.

I agree that the activism of the Parkland students and students everywhere will be a "tipping point" in gun violence and hopefully something that will be a historical moment. There have been so many mass shootings that politicians did not nothing about. It has only been a few months into 2018 and there have been several school shootings while in other countries like Australia who haven't had a mass shooting in about 50 years(CNN).Every time an incident happens it goes all over the news for a week, but then disappears and no one does anything about it. These students are fighting for things like banning bump stocks, Banning assault weapons, and tighter background(Upfront). They are not going to stop voicing out and marching till they get what they deserve. Students are visiting lawmakers and even the president and "their activism has inspired high school students across the country to follow there lead ans stage protests, rallies, and walkouts to draw attention to the issues of school safety and gun control"(Upfront)These student are the next generation and in a few years they can vote and later on become those lawmakers and presidents. Matt Bennet, a founder Third Way even said that"no one knows when we are going to hit a tipping point on this issue. We may hit it - we don't know. But if we did, it's because of them " (Upfront). It is very important to listen to the kids because they are ones that are directly affected by these shooting. They are sick of hearing just thoughts and prayers they want action and they want=it know. The students have taken advantage of social media where they have been trying to spread this movement and try to get as many people involved as possible. Seeing all these kids making a change is really encouraging and motivation because if high schoolers have the strength to make a difference than so does everyone else. In Florida the legislation has already passed multiple laws involving gun violence (Upfront). "Young people have often been on the forefront of demanding social an political change in America" and it will not stop till they have justice. A girl from Stoneman Douglas High School talked about how we cannot keep America great if we cannot keep America safe. Our government should be representing everyone and if they wont agree than everyone will make them. The revolution is never over till all the voices are victorious. It is not over till all the voices of the people who died from a gun hear that they were avenged. They are the generation that lived with school shootings and they are going to be the generation to end it(Upfront).

I agree that the activism of the Parkland students and other students will be a "tipping point" in the issue of gun violence. There have been many shootings, but nothing was really happening to end gun violence. After the Parkland shooting, student decided that they have had enough. They didn't want anyone else to have to suffer the loss of friends and family. They wanted to end gun violence. They talked to members of the Congress and the president and they ran the March For Our Lives rally all around the country. The Parkland students are inspiring students from many other schools to follow them. Other students are inspired to do walkouts and rallies. "There's something about seeing people your age standing up and making speeches and fighting for change that makes you feel like you can do it too." (Kassir, an 18-year old senior) Gun violence was a problem that no one was talking about, but the Parkland students stood up and made a change and inspired other students to make the change with them.

i completely agree that the activism of the parkland students ans other students will be the "tipping point" in the issue of gun violence because so many other people have supported these rally's and protests. they don't want their children to be scared to go to school and the parkland students understand that and they are deter mend to do something about it. honestly when a shooting happens it does not stay on the news for a long time. its only there for a good week and a half and its gone and everyone forgets about it, but this time its different these students want to do something to change the way most politicians view this issue and make sure there is an end to this gun violence. (upfront)
people have been putting together protests, walkouts and rally's to help end this problem. (upfront) in my opinion when people see these protests on the television it opens their eyes and reminds them that there is a problem and that people have lost their lives because of this problem and something needs to change to save lives.

Yes, I very much so agree that this activism displayed by the Parkland students IS a "tipping point" in the issue of gun violence. Through all the school shootings in time, there has never really been a force as powerful, and a fight as powerful as the one shown since the Parkland shooting and from the Parkland students. Since the shooting, there has been trips to the White House, talking to the president of the United States discussing the issue, where we have never really seen this kind of strive for an end to this issue before (upfront). Numerous walkouts and rallies have been held across the country (mostly organized and lead by Parkland students), building an awareness and fighting for a change in this country (upfront). The United States, although it is so developed, lacks the proper force on a gun laws. In the U.S., the gun laws are too lenient and that is a big reason that we have a lot of gun violence related problems in this country. Whereas, in a country like Finland or France, they have stricter laws on the flexibility with guns. And these countries have a lower rate of gun related incidents. With the push from Parkland students, there has been improvement in this conflict. More people are coming out and fighting side by side with the survivors of not just the Parkland shooting, but all school shootings. With the lengthy history of school shootings around the country, people are becoming tired of this unfortunate reality. Because of the desire for this conflict to come to an end, people are fighting back and are fighting to be heard. '"We've seen so many shootings. We're the generation that's had to grow up with this, but I truly believe we're the generation that's going to end this."' says Caroline Kassir. (upfront)
