Corroborating the French Revolution by

Look for primary sources that can corroborate facts in the film Marie Antoinette and/or in the movie Les Misérables. For example, check that the monarchy raised taxes, that the furniture and buildings are plausible in the film, that Marie Antoinette had a lover apart from the dauphin, that Marie gave birth to a girl first, that Louis loved keys, that the fashion is plausible in the clothes, that the citizens became frustrated with Marie Antoinette, that the monarchy was in increasing financial trouble, that opinions towards the monarchy were changing, that the dauphin is more, etc. Check 1 or more details with primary sources (official documents, letters, illuminations, paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, furniture) and use information you can gather from the primary source to confirm one or more detail from setting or the story of the movies we saw in class.

Ancient Map of Versailles

In the "PLAN DE VERSAILLES" by the Abbé Jean de la Grive
( https://www.editions-beauchesne.com/product_info.php?cPath=166_114_170&products_id=1014 ) we see to what extent Versailles is a luxury palace.

I can SEE that it is exactly what we saw in the film (the canal, the palace, etc), and that it has existed since the pre-revolutionary events. You can see the little 'play' house that Louis gave to Marie as a gift, the lake, the fields, and the palace.

I THINK this map could work as evidence that the government at the time (i.e., the French monarchy during the 1700s) was irresponsible, spending so much on a luxury palace when they also had to run their entire country.

I WONDER who profits from the house being a museum now. Does the profit go to someone private, or do the profits from tourism go to help pay for public services like hospitals and schools?

This can prove that government was irresponsible, because the Absolute Monarchy spent so much money building Versailles. The public had no say in the matter, so even while people couldn't afford bread their royal family was building mansions in the Baroque Style.

I see that the King Louis XVI is portrayed by riding a pig. Riding a pig was portrayed as unflattering, unimpressive, comedic and silly. King Louis XVI was indeed, unflattering and unimpressive in the movie. He had no ambition of making a heir, but instead more interested in keys.

I think that this represents King Louis XVI perfectly. As he was unexperienced in being the king of the country and not so interested in managing the country, but instead, interested in keys. I think instead of being into keys at a young age, he should've learnt how to be a future king and how to manage a country and just learn how to actually understand the duty one has to be king.

I wonder why King Louis XVI was interested in keys. if I was king, I probably would've looked into more informational and helpful information to help me when I become king.

This primary source suggests that King Louis XVI was a very unreliable king and could not do his job properly. It is verified and shown in the movie because King Louis is the one that lead French to it's downfall of all the heavy taxing.

People are not born equal because of how the country were back then, The French government was also irresponsible because the government only cared for themselves by only keeping the money to themselves.

I see that this is somewhat in the movie where the higher ups don't care about others beneath them. in the movie when they were surrounded by lots of beggars, they seemed very annoyed by them. as if they didn't want to be around them since they were filthy.
I think this picture fits well because it shows that the higher ups aren't interested in the peasants since they would waste their time trying to deal with them when they could just went on their way. I think that instead of ignoring them they should at least give something away so it may could improve the country
I wonder why they would think it's okay for them to ignore the peasants like it was nothing because if i was them i would at least give something.
this proves that the nobles never really cared about anything that had to do with the peasants since they had lots of power and could kill anyone who devised them. this also proves that the peasant never really meant anything to the higher ups and haves no power.
some of the violation of the human rights were freedom, slavery, and quality there are more but this is what i could think of. The irresponsible government was when they let basically anyone to do what they want

I see that Louis XVI who was also the king being held accountable for his unlawful actions against the people of Paris. A petition was signed to forcefully dethrone the king to restore order as of in late summer of 1792, the counterrevolution that was against the French revolution had easily fell apart because of how large the French society was which also includes the amount of people that were going against a weak monarchy.

I think that the monarchy was clearly a failed government that valued profits over people because it gave them more power over "lesser" citizens, the ego of the monarch government had been huge at the time which is why the French revolution became such a big event after some time passed. A great example on how the government was corrupt is the taxes on bread as that made life even more difficult for peasants to survive in since most of their food were already on a large shortage and could barely survive during the seasonal changes. This is a grand reason for why Louis XVI was not trusted by the citizens to rule as a king, from there he was taken to be dethroned but was later sentenced to death and executed after the trials were passed.

I wonder if a modernized monarchy could work today, can good leaders create a non-corrupt monarchy without living up to its ideals from the past? In comparison to Louis XVI and to current government leaders, how much has really changed within this timespan and I wonder what else can either be implemented or changed in order to strengthen our authority. Greed remains as a factor that travels across the world to this day which is unfortunate but is it possible for a monarchy to rise again with ethical policies that it once never had? Some things that I wonder about Louis XVI is why did he willingly choose to be irresponsible even though he was concerned about the actions he was committing but let himself be brainwashed by his advisors?

I see what looks like two nobles with fancy clothes riding a peasant with shabby robes. The peasant is weak enough to need a walking stick and you can see that he is still strong enough to hold them up.

I think that this represents nobles taking all the luxuries while doing none of the work compared to peasants on the bottom doing all the work but getting almost nothing in return. This stays true to Marie Antoinette when you see that the nobles lay around and do nothing all day but still live in vast luxury. We can also see some of the peasant's side in les miserables when multiple people live in poverty but are constantly working to get by.

I wonder if the nobles know about the state of the peasants or choose to feign ignorance. I want to know if Marie Antoinette truly does not know what happens outside of her mansion or if the movie exaggerated her innocence

This image can prove that the French goverment was irresponsible by seeing that nobles are very lazy but still very wealthy. The peasants also have no say in it because they are currently worrying on feeding themselves.

I see the king and his family riding in a carriage with an escort to Paris. I see crowds waiting for him to get there. i see two very large buildings and a statue of maybe King Louis on a horse.
I think that the royal family may still be trying to keep up their appearance as they still have a royal escort and carriage even though they are being forced to relocate to Paris. I think that they would are still trying to look put together because in the picture they look calm even though they're being guarded by hundreds of armed peasants and even more unarmed watching them. i think that this can prove that the royal family and the government cared more about how they appeared and looked than the actual actions they committed.
I wonder why the peasants are still allowing the royal family to have the fancy carriages and people who fan who knows what, ( I actually cant see what they're fanning) with all those horses when the reason they're mad is that the royal family is spending so much on themselves and not helping their people.

I see two people on another person, the two people on the other person look like people of high ranking (nobles). The guy wearing white looks like someone of lower ranking (peasant), he also looks a bit older than the other two and he is holding a hoe for support. The two nobles are wearing fancy/proper clothes and one has a sword at his side. The noble's clothing has color while the peasant only has white.

I think that the hoe the peasant is using for support is a symbol showing that the hoe, which is a tool for field work, supports the peasants by helping them farm food. The peasant is supporting the nobles on top of him by giving them food with the help of the hoe, and the nobles are depending on the peasants to keep supporting them. I think that if the hoe 'breaks', the peasant will fall and the nobles too which can show that they depend on agriculture.

I wonder why there are animals (the rabbits and the birds) in this picture? I wonder what they represent?

This primary source can prove that the nobles and higher ranking people depended on the peasants farming agriculture and benefitted from all the peasants work. Without the peasants farming and working for the higher ranking people, the nobles will 'fall' and struggle to stay 'up' because they wont have their primary source of food and workers.

I see two people eating. One person is eating a big nutritious meal while the other barely has any food on his plate. The man on the left is very skinny and looks malnourished. The man on the right is very big and looks well kept. this shows us that since the man on the right is big and bulky he's wealthy. the man on the left is eating what looks like grass or dry wheat. the man on the right is eating a very big turkey which he seems to be eating alone. the man on the left is living in a very dirty environment while the man on the right is living in comfort. his home is clean and decorated. Their clothes also show their status. the man on the left's clothes are dirty torn and don't seem high quality while the man on the right's clothes seem clean and look high quality. the man on the left's toenails are very long and dirty and he isn't wearing shoes while the man on the right seems to be wearing high-quality shoes.

I think this primary source shows the different lifestyles between the peasants and nobles. Peasants lived in dirty living conditions with almost little to no furniture and not a lot of food to survive on. On the other hand, nobles lived in comfy clean homes with many lavish decorations and furniture. this proves that status was very important back in the 1700s and it determined your worth/image to society. The peasants were treated poorly because of their low status while the nobles/upper class were treated with respect because of their wealth and power. the peasants had to fend for themselves while the rich got everything handed to them.

I wonder who produced the image and what message they were trying to convey?

This primary source proves that the rich (Marie Antionette) only spent on themselves. They ate luxurious foods and their houses were decorated with expensive furniture. They didn't care about the economy or the people living in poverty. They only cared about satisfying their own needs which shows that they were not an effective form of government. They also raised tax prices on bread when they knew that the poor were already struggling. Marie was selfish for buying fancy gowns and decorating her house in the Baroque style.. the government was selfish for spending money on themselves when they had a country to run.

I think this drawing was done to show the fact that he couldn't even manage himself (as he was getting wasted), let alone the whole of France. I wonder who drew this metaphorical picture, and if it was used to help guide people to scorn Louis even more.
This image helps show that the fact that the people of France hated King Louis in "Marie Antoinette" is correct. this image falls into the "irresponsible government" section of the recipe for revolution because the people weren't happy with how King Louis was running the country (which lead to the creation things like this image).
