This photo is of the menu at Dukes chowder house: a seafood restaurant located very close to Wayward Cafe. I took this photo while I was home over break and I was curious to see what kind of options Dukes had to vegans and other alternative diet followers. Not surprising there were very few vegan items on the menu but I did come across this page which highlighted the gluten free options Dukes has to offer. While Dukes Chowder House will never become a vegan food restaurant, Dukes and many other businesses are beginning to accommodate alternative diet followers more and more. I think the presence of this page might represent a larger shift that has been occurring in the food industry as more people begin to follow diets by choice rather than need.

This is a photo of my friend from high school Adam. I think this picture really speaks to how vegans are regular people. Vegan are not crazy and not all of them are evangelistic about veganism either. In the interview Adam discusses his thoughts on going Vegan and perceptions about veganism. His points are relevant to my research because the best way to learn about veganism is to experience it firsthand and the ways people hear about veganism can influence how they perceive vegans.

This is a photo of a fellow WSU student and close friend of mine, Jack, who has been vegan for the last 2 years. Jack is very headstrong person and wasn't discouraged by the way people in our society view veganism when he became vegan. When our friends in high school first found out he was vegan, people were constantly asking him why he would do something so strange and also jokingly trying to convince him what he was doing was wrong. Jack made it very clear to my friends and I that he didn't bother us about what we were eating so we should let him eat what he wants in peace and we didn't bother him about it after that at all. He gets annoyed when he gets confronted by someone about veganism because it often feels like he has to justify his diet decisions, but he accepts that this is a sacrifice he is willing to make. After watching how tense some of the face to face conversations Jack had with people about his diet, I could only imagine how toxic online conversations might become. The anonymity the internet provides us with can also have negative affects on how we converse about serious topics on the web.

Wayward cafe is an all Vegan cafe offering some very tasty meals in the Green Lake area of north Seattle. This is a photo of one of their many patrons. Wayward is in many forms both a hub for vegans in Seattle and a place where many non-vegans have their first exposure to vegan food. When people first come to Wayward they often are shocked at just how good everything looks and tastes. This photo relates to my research because going to Wayward to learn about vegan culture is completely unlike searching the internet for information on veganism. We rely so much on the internet for information that we sometimes neglect learning the old fashioned way.
pc Betty Brennan

There is a sizable amount of evidence to support following low protein diets but diet science often gets drowned out among all of the "quick and easy" weight loss articles. Many of these pamphlets might be seen by non-vegans as demeaning because they might seem to attack non-vegan lifestyles. To some degree, this forces pamphlets like these to stay in places like wayward were they will actually be well received.

This is a photo of the many milk substitute options available at PCC. In addition to having a wide selection of protein substitutes, Vegans have a wide selection of milk substitutes to use in cooking. Vegans are a minority so most recipes in american culture do rely on animal products, but this does not prevent vegans from being able to cook whatever they want. This relates to my research because there exists a belief in our society that veganism cannot be flexible but veganism does not have to be as inflexible as most people think.

This is a photo of the Vegan protein powder options offered at PCC, a natural market in Seattle. If vegans decide they need to augment their protein intake with something super convenient, they can rely on a variety of protein powder mixes. Many people are reluctant to go vegan because people believe vegans don't get enough protein in their diets. I think that statement is growing more and more outdated because the science we have to make synthetic foods almost makes being vegan easy. This photo also makes me think of the irony that many of the people I know that don't like vegans, are also the people that are constantly making their own protein powder shakes for weightlifting. It's interesting how two subcultures can not even realize how much they have in common with each other.

This is an image of some Youtube revenue statistics the represent how influential internet content creators are now. Many people don't realize just how influential content creators have become recently. Over a billion people use youtube and some creators have such a large following, having them make sponsored content can generate a large amount of revenue. This relates to my research because the number of content creators and the influence they have will only grow in the future. In addition to the number of content creators increasing, the frequency content will be sponsored will also only increase as well so as members of this society we will need to become better at filtering out when we are being subtly marketed to.

Alice Ma, the official dietitian for the dining halls is vegan and she has probably influenced the amount of Vegan food options that will be offered at the dining halls in the future. The photo is relevant to my research because the vegan chili is somewhat of a joke between some of my friends and I. Unlike some vegan media on the internet, Jack does not waste time bashing or shaming non-vegans. Rather, he makes it clear that he just wants to inform people about how going vegan has made his life better.
