Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: The King of Chocolate

Many people are very passionate when it comes to candy, especially when it comes to arguing for the crowned favorite. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are better than Snickers because they have the perfect balance of simplicity, flavour, and versatility. Unlike Snickers, which features ingredients such as caramel, peanuts, chocolate, and a cream filling, Reese’s only has two ingredients: peanut butter and chocolate, which blend perfectly together to create a sweet, yet salty treat. The simplicity makes them enjoyable and iconic, appealing to a larger demographic of people. For example, people with braces, like me, have a hard time chewing tougher and stickier foods, and are actually recommended to stay away from them by orthodontists. Because of this, it is more likely for me to reach for a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup than to ask for a Snickers bar. Reese’s can be incorporated into recipes for foods like cookies, pies, and even milkshakes or ice cream; on the other hand, Snickers are thick and tough to consume in any form other than their original state as chocolate bars for the most part. Additionally, Reese’s releases different variations of shapes during their according seasons; Christmas trees, Easter eggs, Halloween bats, and Valentine hearts, something that people look forward to year-round. Their flavor and adaptability prove that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the superior chocolate treat.

What really stuck with me from Vedantam’s introduction is the idea that self-deception isn’t always bad. I’ve always thought lying to yourself was a weakness, but he makes a strong case that sometimes we need it to survive or stay hopeful. The story about Donald Lowry and the “Church of Love” was wild. I couldn’t believe that people actually defended him even after they found out it was all fake. But when Vedantam explained that the letters had given them comfort and even stopped some from taking their own lives, it made sense in a sad way. It’s strange to think that something built on lies could still bring real emotional relief.

Another part that stood out to me was when he said our brains don’t care about what’s true: they care about what works. That line really hit me. I’d never thought about how much our brains filter what we see and believe just to help us function. It’s kind of scary but also interesting. It makes me wonder how much of what I think I “know” is actually just my brain protecting me from something uncomfortable.
