Dactylogyrus or Gill flukes are egg-laying ectoparasites that latch onto the gills of a host fish. Infection worsens in periods in which weather and humidity increase in temperature and percentage. Symptoms of gill flukes include excessive secretions from the mucous membranes . Lethargy, fatigue and decreased movement may also be observed. Suppression of appetite is also a main symptom. Infected fish may appear to relieve gill areas by scratching themselves against rocks or other sharp surfaces. Dactylogyrus (Gill Flukes) can often cause secondary bacterial infections. These infections can result in death.
