After reading this text, I felt validated knowing the work that we have put into the SOR in previous book studies is paying off in the classroom. A lot of what the author of the book, "The 7 Mighty Moves" said to sift our focus to, is what we have already done with the explicit phonics instruction that we started last year:)

The challenges I see are being able to stay organized, (both in my instruction and my collection of data), being able to stick to shorter, faster paced lessons and having time to deliver all of the different aspects mentioned in this book.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It was refreshing to see that we are already some of these moves in our classrooms. I am happy to have learned that many of the things I am already doing in speech therapy support reading skills. I also love that the majority of the strategies I learned about can be used in speech therapy to support speech sound development, comprehension, syntax, and vocabulary. I am excited to continue using the strategies from the book with all of my students during the 2024/2025 school year. I am excited to make changes to the ways that I decorate my classroom to provide better visuals to support reading, speech, and language skills. Finally, I am excited to know that a handful of educators in our district completed this book study. A challenge that I am going to face when implementing these strategies is that often times the students in my speech groups are at different reading skill levels. (Unfortunately, I have to schedule students based on times they can be pulled and not based on their skill level or goals.) This will make it difficult to determine the level of scaffolding to provide and which target words and reading passages to use during therapy sessions. In addition, my students will not always be appropriate partners for each other when using these strategies. Finally, I will have to eliminate the writing aspect from some of the strategies mentioned because I will not have enough time to wait for my students to write during my short therapy sessions. - Sylvia Mattice

Time, of course, but also managing supplies efficiently. I use whiteboards often whole group at the carpet, but maybe there's a more time-efficient way... Maybe each student makes a Reading Bag with their supplies and then we can save the time they spend rifling through the bucket of erasers? Open to suggestions! Do I staple a little stack of the word lists for partner reading, then have them tear off the sheet and use it for homework? --Cathleen Collins

One concern I have, is independent reading. When choosing a book from my classroom library, it is difficult to make sure the students are selecting a book that they can read. Many times the book they are choosing is too hard for them. I am using decodables during WIN groups, that are targeted to each group's needs, but how do I judge what type of "authentic" book is a good fit for them? -CL

I feel like a challenge will be implementing these strategies at the Pre-K level because the students are so young and have different home life experiences, some with exposure to letters/books and some might not have had any.
