Keizersgracht 74, constructed around 1620, showcases a variety of architectural styles through its history. Recently, a seventeenth-century painted pine ceiling was uncovered when the modern suspended ceiling was removed. But the house has more treasures: the middle section and winding staircase, likely from the 1760 renovation, are designed in Rococo style. The marble wall finish in the first-floor corridor of the front house and the stairwell, dating from 1922, is in Art Deco style. Additionally, the house features various stained glass doors and windows in the Amsterdam School style. During the tour these, and other features will be highlighted.

https://monumentenregister.cultureelerfgoed.nl/monumenten/2476 (in Dutch)

Originally presumed to date back to approximately 1760, this house has revealed its true origins, tracing back to around 1660, thanks to two discoveries in 2019. Among these findings are a coffered ceiling discovered in the front room of the belle-étage and a painting concealed beneath a newly stuccoed ceiling. The coffered ceiling features complex wood carving and painted decoration of exceptional quality, characterized by an olive green background adorned with acanthus leaves. The beams are also painted green, but in a distinct shade, which calls for further investigation through paint analysis to determine if they belong to a later period.

Additional clues hinting at seventeenth-century decorations have been uncovered in various other areas of the house, further details regarding these seventeenth-century decorations will be provided as part of the tour experience.

Find out more:

Singel 112 - Amsterdam Monumentenstad, database van de Amsterdamse grachtengordel (amsterdam-monumentenstad.nl)

This grand and stately canal house, built around 1686, stood out for its impressive dimensions, surpassing many of its neighbouring canal residences in width and height. Remarkably for that time, the house was owned by a married woman, Alida van Loon, who not only served as the patron of the building but also managed significant influence over its interior decor, upholstery, and furnishings. Alida was resolute in her efforts to infuse modernity into the house, with wide window-bays and high floors, resulting in a rather monumental style. While numerous alterations have been made to the property over the years, a part of its original design remains in the form of a beautifully preserved kitchen with built-in cabinets. Originally, the vestibule was adorned with trompe l'oeil (grisaille) paintings, but is now stuccoed. However, the adjoining room still boasts its original ceiling painting, a proof of Alida's commitment to achieving the highest standards of interior decoration. Historical inventories reveal that the walls were once adorned with gilded leather, adding to the richness of the space. The saloon was adorned with tapestries, and had an alcove in which stood a poster bed, which was the absolute summit of Dutch interior at the time, reserved for the most privileged.

Find out more:

This tour is humouredly named ‘IJ candy’, referring to the IJ (Amsterdam's waterfront), which is pronounced like ‘eye’. During the middle ages, dikes were built alongside the IJ and the river Amstel and the area became an important trading centre with the Baltic sea. In the houses built in this continuously expanding city, unique fragments of untouched painted finishes have been preserved, recalling those prosperous times.
