Realism is the attempt to approach a subject as truthfully as possible. It can't have any form of fiction or supernatural elements because it is meant to be 100% real. It is used in many forms of Art and Literature to present a more honest and unidealized view of our everyday life. Realism was created in the 1840s, and it became extremely popular between the 1850s and 1880s. It was originally created as an opposition to romanticism which was extremely popular at the time. Most realism artists were ordinary people who were drawing what they would do on an ordinary day. These kinds of simple drawings took over many artists' paintings and they became extremely popularized. It is still being used to this day as a way to show what is actually going on in our world.

Realism was an artistic movement that was followed by the french revolution. Realists were seen with their emphasis on intense emotions and dramatic effects. Gustave Courbet was the first artist to self-consciously proclaim and practice realism. It began as a reacction to romantismism and history. Painters thought that it would be a good idea to use real world activities in their paintings. Many of these drawings where of common laborers and ordinary people just doing their work. This was because realism is based on direct observation of the world. Realism has came a long way and it is sill being used in our everyday lives.
