It can't have any form of fiction or supernatural elements because it is meant to be 100% real. It is used in many forms of Art and Literature to present a more honest and unidealized view of our everyday life. Realism was created in the 1840s, and it became extremely popular between the 1850s and 1880s. It was originally created as an opposition to romanticism which was extremely popular at the time. Most realism artists were ordinary people who were drawing what they would do on an ordinary day. These kinds of simple drawings took over many artists' paintings and they became extremely popularized. It began as a reacction to romantismism and history. Painters thought that it would be a good idea to use real world activities in their paintings. Many of these drawings where of common laborers and ordinary people just doing their work. This was because realism is based on direct observation of the world. It was mainly created as a response to all of the scientific discoveries being made at the time. Many Naturalism artist are inspired by Charles Darwin.
